What should we expect from Derrick Rose in New York?

By Justin Ahrns / Roar Pro

From being an MVP winner in 2011, to being traded for a few role players in 2016, Derrick Rose has experienced the ultimate highs and lows so far throughout his NBA career.

Rose has had issues with his body, including many knee surgeries. So what level can he be expected to play at in New York in 2017?

Rose will undoubtedly start for the Knicks, and play alongside a star-studded line-up including Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick’s good friend and former Bull Joakim Noah.

Rose showed glimpses of his former self last season with Chicago, as his athleticism and explosiveness returned at times. That said, consistency was a major issue, as he struggled to put more than two or three high quality games together consecutively.

Throughout his final stint at the Bulls he was consistently overshadowed by Jimmy Butler, who is now in Rio with the United States national team.

If his body holds up, and Derrick can appear in at least 65 games in 2017, it is realistic to believe he could play at an all-star level.

He has the floor-spacing and shooting surrounding him to open up driving lanes, as well as the great passing at the centre position in Joakim Noah.

Rose will never return to his MVP-form, but can certainly play at an all-star level in 2017, and maybe make the all-star game as a reserve in the typically weaker Eastern Conference.

The ultimate goal, however, is to be healthy for a long playoff run, and finally feel the jubilation of winning a championship. It is certainly a tough ask for the boy from Chicago.

Okay so someone stole his identity and impersonated him on court for the last three years then because the guy named Derrick Rose that played for the bulls has been a below average starter. Thanks for clearing that up

No reason? Even if it holds up its degraded in athleticism (his primary trait) and he's shown nothing thus far to suggest he's had a grant Hill moment with regards to understanding that. If he hasn't changed his game completely then Irving lowry and wall would need to be shot dead to be worse than rose.

Rose can still play and is above average when healthy. Whether or not Rose himself can accept that he will no longer be the man is the bigger issue. Not sure you can label Rose dumb, although it has been implied by a number of journos. I remember for years it was said Patrick Ewing couldn't read or write after he finished at Georgetown which was later proven to completely untrue.

I believe his athleticism is still there, but mentally he struggles to trust himself. As a Bulls fan, it is clear we were better when he was on the court, and I reckon the same will be the case in New York - if hes healthy!

If his body holds up no reason he cannot return to his all-star form!

Rose is at best an average NBA player now whether he & his fans want to acknowledge it or not.The explosiveness is gone & that was what his game was built on,kind of like Russell Westbrook is now.Extremely talented physically. The problem is Rose isn't the sharpest guy & the Knicks are an absolute train wreck of an organization who still probably believe he is an elite talent,so its a bad mix right out of the gate.
