After almost two weeks of waiting, the triathletes finally get their chance to go for gold in Rio. Join The Roar for live commentary and updates of the men’s triathlon from 12 midnight (AEST).

The triathlon is one of the more grueling events on the Olympic program. Competitors are required to complete a 1.5km swim, followed by a 43km cycle and a 10km run. Incredibly, the fastest runners will complete the run in under 30 minutes, just a couple of minutes slower than the time Mo Farah ran to win the 10,000m track event on Sunday.

British brothers, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee will start the race as favourites. Alistair has competed in just three World Triathlon Series races this season, but he has been victorious in two of those competitions. Jonathan finished in second place behind Alistair in both of those races, while also picking up two more podium finishes throughout the season.

Australia will be represented by Ryan Bailie, Ryan Fisher and Aaron Royle, a trio of first-time Olympians. With two races remaining in the World Series, Bailie is the best placed of the Aussies, currently sitting in sixth position. The Australians will start this race as outside medal chances and it will take a mighty effort if one of them is to win a medal.

The Spaniards, however, are genuine medal contenders and will push the Brownlee brothers the entire way. Mario Mola and Fernando Alarza currently sit first and second in the world rankings, with Mola having won four World Series events.

However, Mola and Alistair Brownlee haven’t actually met in a World Series event this season. This raises the prospect for an exciting battle between two racers who haven’t had the opportunity to scout their rival.

Will Alistair be able to defend his title or will Jonathan or Mario Mola cause an upset?

Join The Roar tonight at 12 midnight (AEST) for live updates and commentary to find out.
