In a scrappy, low-scoring match at the MCG, the St Kilda Saints have beaten the Richmond Tigers by nine points.

Both sides struggled comprehensively with disposal in the first half, with turnovers, fumbles and poor decision making the flavour of the day.

Richmond in particular struggled, with many key players failing to find a way into the game.

Paddy McCartin started well, kicking the first two goals for the Saints before a shocking incident resulting in a broken collarbone ended his day and indeed, his season.

By the main break the Tigers had only managed to kick two goals and trailed the Saints by 22 points.

Thankfully, Richmond improved drastically in the second, in no small part to the efforts of first-year forward Daniel Rioli, whose continual commitment to the contest proved just why he is going to be a star of the future.

The Tigers managed the only goal of the third term, and it looked like perhaps a surprise comeback was on its way.

St Kilda steadied in the fourth quarter however, cleverly running the clock down to record their eleventh win for the year.

Seb Ross was the best player on the ground, finishing with 34 touches, six tackles and six clearances. Leigh Montagna also had a big day, gathering 33 possessions of his own. Nick Riewoldt continued his marvellous run of form in his 30s, taking ten marks and earning 21 disposals.

Dustin Martin’s Brownlow aspirations might have taken a hit today – despite the superstar finding the Sherrin 31 times he was not his usual standout self, struggling to break the game open.

Kane Lambert and Nick Vlaustin also can hold their heads high, with decent showings today.

St Kilda can take this momentum now and finish off this year strongly by beating the Brisbane Lions next week, resulting in a successful season and a great step in the right direction for the rebuilding club.

Richmond on the other hand have arguably footy’s hardest task in front of them: the Swans at the SCG.

There’s no mincing words when we say that this season has been a disaster for the Tigers, and from today’s effort it’s not hard to see why.
