Manchester United vs Southampton: EPL preview

By Isaac Nowroozi / Roar Guru

Manchester United will be looking to continue their positive start to the 2016/17 Premier League season when they host Southampton at Old Trafford.

Coming off a win over AFC Bournemouth in their opening fixture, Manchester United’s new squad, managed by Jose Mourinho, looks like a truly scary attacking side.

Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all found the net for the Red Devils at the Goldsands Stadium, as United took all three points in style whilst showing off just how good their attack has become.

Having been unable to defeat Southampton in their last three Premier League games at home, the Red Devils will be looking to make a statement against the Saints as they look to put a disappointing 2015/16 campaign behind them.

Coming off a 1-all draw with Watford in their opening fixture, Southampton will be looking to continue being a thorn in Manchester United side and get their first win of the season.

After going down early in the game, Nathan Redmond scored in the second to bring the game level.

If the Saints are able to pull off the upset at Old Trafford, they will be just the second team to beat the Red Devils three consecutive times at that venue, joining their bitter rivals Manchester City.

The last time these two sides faced off was back in January at Manchester. It looked the like game was headed to a scoreless draw, before an 87th minute goal via Charlie Austin broke the deadlock and the hearts of United fans. Southampton held on for the 1-nil win.

Prediction
Manchester United look like a Premier League winning side, and Southampton have yet to find their feet this season. Expect the Red Devils to make it two-in-a-row at home.

Manchester United 3 – 1 Southampton

The really noticeable change in appearance with ManU this season is the dramatic increase in height in the team with Pogba, Ibrahimovic & Bailly now vying with Fellaini, Rashford & Smalling for domination up in the air. This should now see increased pressure on the likes of Rooney, Mata , Young, Martial , Shaw & Valencia to deliver some quality crosses into the box . I expect to see plenty of headed goals this season from the ManU boys and hopefully their dodgy back four defence is somewhat strengthened at the same time.

Still very early in the season. I still have my doubts. Not because he's in the EPL but the combination of his age, a weaker team around him than PSG and the less time you get on the ball in the EPL. See how he goes as the season wears on

It's funny how many people thought Zlatan wouldn't score goals in the EPL. I thought he would be the top scorer. He has scored everywhere he has been. Doesn't look like it will be any different in the EPL.
