By Scott Pryde / Expert

The Wests Tigers have kept their minimal finals chances alive at Mount Smart Stadium, recording a high-scoring, entertaining 12-point victory over the New Zealand Warriors.

Led by their forwards in a game that went back and forth plenty of times, Mitchell Moses would make the most of a tired Warriors defensive line to spark the Tigers to a come from behind victory.

Aaron Woods played a fantastic game, picking up nearly 200 metres with the Warriors simply unable to make the right decisions consistently enough or win the battle of the middle for long enough periods.

The Warriors were the first onto the scoreboard with Bodene Thompson crashing over. David Nofoaluma would drop a simple grubber, and off the scrum the defence opened up with a short ball to Thompson who scored with ease.

The Tigers would then score back to back tries, the first of which saw Sauaso Sue go over from a wonderful short ball from Woods, who ran to the line and drew defenders, opening a massive gap for Sue.

Woods would then score himself, going over the top of the defence on the last tackle off a short ball out of dummy half from Dene Halatau.

Solomone Kata would then score a try after Thomas Leuluai found some space on the left edge, passed to Ryan Hoffman and then a final offload for Kata to score.

Simon Mannering got the Warriors back into the lead, scoring off a kick that saw the ball get tapped out the back. Mannering came up with it and no one even got close to him as he scored under the sticks.

The half ended in a little bit of controversy with a massive passing sequence leading to a try for Solomone Kata, only for an obstruction to be ruled.

The controversy continued into the second half, with the Warriors denied another try for a similarly soft obstruction on Aaron Woods. In the end though, any team who has 36 points put on them doesn’t deserve to win a game of rugby league.

The first try of the second half took 16 minutes to come, with both teams visibly tired due to the pace of the game. From a scrum in their own end, the Tigers shifted to Josh Addo-Carr and he broke through the line, running rings around David Fusitu’a to score on an 80 metre run.

Tuimoala Lolohea would then tie the game up for the Warriors. They were struggling to get out of their own end, but a quick shift to the right saw Blake Ayshford break through – he would then link with Shaun Johnson on the inside before passing back out to Lolohea who scored in the corner.

The Tigers would run away with the game in the final ten minutes though, running on three tries.

The first of those was through Sauaso Sue to tie the game up, scoring his second off a short ball from Mitchell Moses, following a wonderful 40/20 kick from Luke Brooks.

They hit the lead just a couple of minutes later through Mitchell Moses who dummied right, then stepped back on the inside a couple of times before reaching out to score.

The final play of the game saw a kick go up, which was allowed to bounce into the in goal area before Kevin Naiqama came cruising through to plant the ball and keep the Tigers season alive.

The Wests Tigers will now need to defeat the Canberra Raiders next week to qualify for the finals, and that is providing that the Gold Coast Titans lose to the North Queensland Cowboys.

Final Score
New Zealand Warriors 24
Wests Tigers 36

The Roar’s NRL MVP votes
3 – Aaron Woods
2 – Mitchell Moses
1 – David Fusitu’a

The All Blacks are the national game here, bar none, like Oz, where rugby ranks about 4th or 5th. Gotta say though, Manu is great at times and other times is just awful. Mannering is about the greatest player since Mark Graham. The Warriors continue to be in the middle of the pack, not last and getting flogged, like most seem to portray the team. When they fist mentioned Sheck and Luke were coming the media and alot of fans thought a premiership was there for the taking. Yeah, well you gotta get a grip. As a coach I took a team with so called no ones, and we won a premiership against a team with ex reserve grade Raiders, Sydney Metro cup players etc etc. The old saying rang true, team of great players or a great team, well I witnessed the later flog the former.

Cedric, I thought with Luke and Sheck arriving this year was a definite ticket to the finals. As i said i didnt turn the tv on until after the final whistle. My first sight was that of the Warriors. It wasnt a look of , we just lost but wern't good enough, they were shattered. Remember i never watched the game , the look on their faces was indescribable, more like disgust. Yes i've seen the try, disregarding the forward pass , it should have been awarded. Several decisions annoy me these days, impeding the defender tops the list or should i say going out of your way to get in the way to look like you've been impeded. But as i said the Warriors know themselves , they cant blame 1 decision or 1 game on another failed season. And yes i do feel the frustration of being a fan, i' m a Balmain supporter. Jacko, i would prefer not to blame the coach. How many coaches do they want to hang in their hunting cabinet. Time to get serious Warriors, you have a responsibility to the club, your fans , the game of RL in NZ and for expansion. For mine expansion is coming soon. The Warriors could have an adverse effect on a NZ2 entry.

Yep ! I really don't understand the apparent lack of will & intensity to win at all costs by the Warriors ? They are such polar opposites to their mighty All Blacks cousins who express every match the desire to win at all costs. Even the Kiwi cricketers & netballers are fierce competitors, but the Warriors ? They had such a great opportunity over the past month to seal a finals berth, but again simply exited without even a whimper ! They just seem content to collect their participation awards and have a friendly get together after the game ! I just don't get it ?

Maybe you should coach the Warriors Birdy. You probably couldnt do worse than Crappy Mc Crappy. They lost something like their first 9 games yet tried the exact same tactix every game. They drive out talent like Hurrell, ( he seems to be a decent player at the titens) and they buy players like Wright and Allwood at the expense of junior talent. Making those sort of dumb decisions means you miss finals most of the time

IMHO the Warriors will never win until they instill a new culture of accountability. This culture must be led by the senior players and nobody must be exempt. The Storm and All Blacks are perfect examples of senior player-led cultures in both on and off the field standards. Let's look at off the field where you you have the Warriors and the "pill-gate" incident earlier in the year involving two senior players in Vatuvei and Matulino (three if you include B.Thompson). Then on the field you again have Vatuvei (who is a club "marquee" player) consistently making fundamental errors at crucial times in games even after 10years of top grade. Refusing to drop him means there's no accountability and accepting mediocre standards breeds mediocrity. I love Bellamy' criteria for recruitment which is to pick hardworkers who's best and worst games are not that far apart over talent any day.

Birdy you say, the Warriors have a squad that should make the finals every year. I thought, even with Luke and Sheck arriving this year, 2017 would be the year to go deep into the finals. You are listening to media hype and I don't know what. The Warriors are littered with young guys. Fusitua, Lolohea, Mamalo, Kata, Vete, Lisone, Afoa, Tavita etc etc. Take a look at the top four teams, not many young guys there. If that's your idea of coaching a team, you haven't coached then. If they, the Warriors, have a bad attitude, well you must also include the Tigers and every team below them on the table. And maybe some of the teams that lost several games in a row, eg Broncos, Souths, Roosters etc oh and the Cowboys, Sharks......... Incidently did you see the bunker RULINGS? And what are your thoughts on those?

I cant believe i thought the game was 4pm, turned the tv on to see the final score. Aaaarrrrghhhh. Happy to see my Tigers keep their finals hopes alive but it leaves me with the question on everyones lips, what now for the Warriors? Year in and year out they fail . They have a squad that should be in the finals every year.if i were their coach , at the start of preseason training and after every poor performance next year i would make them and all their families watch the footage of yesterdays post game of the looks of shame and disbelief on their faces. They didn't miss the finals due to 1 bunker ruling, nor did they miss the finals due to 1 bad game.they missed out due to a bad attitude in the club.

any team who has 36 points put on them doesn’t deserve to win a game of rugby league. You do realise that the 2 tries that should have been awarded would have made the score line 36-12 to the Warriors dont you? NRL anti Warriors reffing comes up again and obviously the Refs are told not to let the Warriors win. This constant bias against the Warriors is so bad I wish the Warriors would join the Auckland rugby scene and take the 40 juniors per year coming out of NZ away from the NRL. Decisions like those on sunday happen almost every week against the Warriors and then you get rulings like the GUBB suspension which just reinforces the constant bias

great game by two teams with sloppy defence, as witnessed by several soft tries through the middle. You have to shake your head at the first obstruction though, then ofcourse the second one had to be called the same. I think for those who didn't see these calls, they should see them, they are being aired on Oz sky news now. They show, if you are in the vicinity of a player with the ball, just run at the closest opposition player and throw your hands in the air, and a penalty will be awarded. It was a weird call by the bunker, but maybe they saw the forward pass the ref missed and decided to call it a no try anyhow, using the shepparding excuse to cover for the missed forward pass. That's what my initial reaction was, I shrugged my shoulders and immediatly thought, oh well it was a forward pass anyway, so ok no try. BUT THEN we get a similar situation, so they had to call this one an obtruction too!!!!! If the first one was a try, which it was, the Warriors would have run off with maybe another 12 points therefore 36 points and as you say Scott what team deserves to win when they have 36 points put on them. You would think Manu and Matalino might not make the Kiwis, they both looked like they were running in mud and Manu showed little urgency at all. Luke also is not at his best again. Vete hit like a mack truck but the Tigers front row rolled the Warriors! Boy oh boy, right from the start they got tired of tackling Woods and when he went off for a break their go forward nearly stopped. Sue was good too. And the Tigers never say die was awesome. the Tigers backs are not big boys, the Warriors backs are giants compared to them.

Good on ya Tigers. The Warriors are f#%ng DISGRACE!! As a 20yr fan since its inception I'm sick of the inept performances especially the likes of butter fingers Manu drop balls and making fundamental errors at crucial times. What a JOKE!!!
