It’s that time of the year. The sign on BBQ has been and gone, the overcooked onion and sausages have been enjoyed, and pre-season is about to begin.

Pre-season training begins for us now, for many of us it will be the first time we have held a bat or ball in six months, minimum. So what should we remember coming back to cricket? Well here is some hints and tips.

1. Don’t hate the future

The 15-year-old kid who is smacking you in the nets and you know is going to take your spot in the line-up does not deserved to be bounced.

This one is hard to accept for some of us. The 15-year-old kid who comes as across as an arrogant little… isn’t doing this to you on purpose – I think – he is just supremely talented and is the future of your club, so don’t bounce him.

2. Get ready to hurt.
For many this will be the first time we have bowled in over six months and it is important that you know that you are about to rediscover muscles you forgot you had and may not be able to walk the next day so get ready to use a sickie.

3. Time to work on your new sledges for the season.
For many cricketers their main contribution to the team is their ability to talk to the opposition so it is important that they prepare to contribute from the first game.

4. Go and find your kit.
As I have said a few times most of us haven’t played cricket in a few months so your cricket gear and bat could be anywhere, especially if your spouse has been cleaning recently, so go looking for it now!

5. Get ready to hear the rattle.
This is what preseason is for to get rid of the dust and regain the fitness to play cricket but before that happens you are going to suck. This means when you are in the nets facing up to your club’s best fittest bowlers, you are going to hear those stumps a lot.

Is there anything I have missed? Its a great time of the year, and lets all enjoy it.
