Aussie team Reborn locks in a chance at a million bucks at Blizzcon

Australian Heroes of the Storm team, Reborn, will be set for the biggest challenge of their eSports career when they head to California for BlizzCon 2016 next month.

Reborn were pitted against Negative Synergy during the Heroes of the Storm Season 3 Grand Finals for Australia and New Zealand last weekend in Sydney, with the winner of the best-of-seven tournament earning a ticket to BlizzCon.

In what was a rollicking encounter in which momentum swung from side to side, Reborn claimed the grand final victory in six matches, taking home their tickets to BlizzCon, as well the trophy and a hefty share of the $16,000 prize pool.

That prize pool pales in comparison to what’s on offer at BlizzCon; the 12 teams who have made it to the showpiece event for the Heroes of the Storm event will duel it out for a share of the $1 million USD prize pool.

Of course, it’s going to be a far greater challenge for Reborn to get their mittens on the prize this time around. The 12 teams will kick-start the tournament in the group stage during BlizzCon’s Opening Week, with the contingent being whittled down to eight sides.

Should the Aussies survive the first cut, they’ll progress into the second group stage of the tournament, which would include a profile-boosting appearance on the BlizzCon stage. After that, the top four teams will go into the elimination stage to find out who will be crowned World Champions.

BlizzCon hasn’t been particularly kind to Australian participants in the past, with the Starcraft and Heroes divisions dominated by the Korean, European and American pro gamers.

Opening Week gets underway on October 26 (US time), before BlizzCon proper takes place on November 4 and 5.

You’ll be able to catch all of Reborn’s action for free on Twitch.

There’s going to be plenty of other action on offer at the massive gaming convention, with World of Warcraft Arena, Overwatch, Hearthstone and Starcraft II also having their own tournaments at BlizzCon.
