Jarryd Hayne to try his hand at golf

By News / Wire

Golf could be the next sport on Jarryd Hayne’s list of dreams, with the Gold Coast fullback set to play in a pro-am event in Fiji in October.
But this time NRL fans can likely rest easy as the code-hopper isn’t believed to be considering a future in the sport – he’s just playing as a VIP guest ahead of the Fiji International, as part of an ambassadorial role on October 5.

The NRL-turned-NFL-turned-rugby-sevens-turned-NRL star will play alongside PGA Tour winner Steven Bowditch to help raise money for the Cyclone Winston recovery efforts after more than 40 people were killed by the wild weather in the country earlier this year.

“I love Fiji and I love sport so to be able to come back and witness Fiji’s largest sporting event is a great way to spend some time,” Hayne said.

“Playing with a two-time PGA TOUR winner is an incredible opportunity that doesn’t come around very often.

“I hope that a golf fan out there sees playing with Bowdo and I as a unique experience and that we generate a large donation for the Winston recovery efforts.”

Bowditch will be joined by the likes of three-time major champion Vijay Singh, Australian Robert Allenby and world No.23 Brandt Snedeker at the Fiji International, which begins the next day,

However, PGA Tour of Australiasia chief executive Brian Thorburn said Hayne would be one of the biggest drawcards at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

“Jarryd has proven he is a world-class athlete in so many sports and has a global fan base,” Thorburn said.

“His support of the Fiji International will further assist the Fiji International in reaching all sports fans, not just golf fans.”

Gee I was really worried I hadn't heard from him - good to see theres undoubtedly a media release just before the Grand Finals - is that why the NRL tipped money into the Gold Coast so he could buy more column inches
