TWO GOOD! Zahra wins back-to-back Melbourne Cups on Without a Fight as three horses pull up lame
Without a Fight completed the rare Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double on Tuesday as star jockey Mark Zahra went back-to-back in the big one after…
The 2016 Melbourne Cup has been won by Almandin, with Heartbreak City in second, pre-race favourite Hartnell in third and Qewy in fourth place.
Who came last: Rose of Virginia, the final entrant into the race and number 24, finished last in the 2016 Melbourne Cup, passing the post 99.9 lengths behind Almandin.
Congratulations to all sweep losers for getting their money back on Rose of Virginia!

Almandin began at $16 this morning, and was tipped by our Roar expert Tristan Rayner in his preview of the 2016 Melbourne Cup.
The winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy has won his second Melbourne Cup, having won it on Brew in 2000.
Almandin was one of four runners entered by Lloyd Williams, and gives the legendary owner his fifth Melbourne Cup win, an unprecedented achievement in the sport.
The race started out at an even if not frantic pace, with no gaps appearing in the field.
As the horses settled into stride with a third of the race run, they ran two abreast. Holes began to form in the field halfway through the run, with some of the big runners falling well back, including Who Shot Thebarman who sat last for a majority of the run.
The pace seriously rose coming into the final straight, but nothing split the field as they came into the final straight. But it would be Almandin and Heartbreak City move through the field with serious pace, to absolutely smoke the rest of the field.
It was a two-horse race in the end, with Almandin pipping Hearbreak City by a nose in a time of 3:20:58, but it looked as though either horse could have finished as the winner.
Both jockeys knew precisely what to do on their stayers towards the end of the run, the easing off the whips into the straight.
Almandin had plenty going for him with his recent form. He won the Harry White at Caulfield (2400m) and impressively won in the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington as the favourite.
The run in the Bart Cummings was strong. He was well handicapped despite receiving a 1kg penalty.
The fact that Williams elected to ride Kerrin McEvoy on him was an indication he was the owner’s best chance.
It truly was a race to remember, with both Almandin and Heartbreak City worthy of a win, but only one gets to take home the immense $3.6 million prize after the race.
Hartnell couldn’t muster the strength to run with the two breakaways but still ran a gallant third, while Qewy’s connections would be pleased with a fourth-placed run in a tough field.
What a race. Well done to Almandin, trainer, Kerrin McEvoy and all connections.
