Match preview:

It’s the F3 Derby with the Newcastle Jets hosting the Central Coast Mariners in a no-love-lost contest, that has been one of the highlights of the A-League since its inception. Join The Roar for live scores for the match and a live blog of the game, starting from 5pm (AEDT).

Both sides have only won one game from the opening six rounds and have been extremely inconsistent throughout. The Mariners struggled in Canberra against a less than full strength Phoenix and were beaten convincingly.

Meanwhile it took two goals before the Jets woke up last week against Melbourne City. They will need a better start this week, and of the two teams look the more likely to get on the scoreboard first.

However the side has been plagued by injuries especially to their defenders. Skipper Nigel Boogaard the latest to join Daniel Mullen, Daniel Alessi and Lachlan Jackson on the sideline.

Despite their struggles the winner of this game could find themselves inside the top six depending on other results.

Hopefully the lure of winning the F3 Derby can inspire these teams in a game that otherwise doesn’t have much else going for it.

Stat of the match
Newcastle are the only team to have not conceded a goal in the final half hour of games this season. It’s their start of games that have let them down, with the Jets conceding the first goal in each of their last four fixtures.

Prediction
Both teams haven’t been great, but the Mariners have been awful this season, perhaps changing Paul Izzo out of goals might stop the Mariners leaking goals but it is hard to say.

I am going with a Jets 2-1 victory.
