Celtic have a monumental task ahead of them as they fight to stay in the Champions League when they come up against heavyweights FC Barcelona. Join The Roar for live scores from the match at Celtic Park in Glasgow, Scotland, starting from 6:45am on Thursday morning (AEDT).

It’s fair to say that this is something of a mismatch on paper. Scottish club Celtic are no slouches, but against Barcelona they are facing a giant of club football and, if he is named to play, one of the world’s very best in Lionel Messi.

Celtic are on a fifteen-game unbeaten run in their domestic competition but have not fared nearly so well in their Champions League fixtures this year.

From four matches played they are still winless in the groups stage, and in particular their seven-goal thrashing at the hands of Barcelona earlier in the tournament will count against them today.

Aside from that they have had a 3-3 draw with Manchester City, and split their meetings with Borussia Mönchengladbach as one draw and one loss, leaving them on the bottom of their group with just two points to their name. Every other team in the group has had at least one win.

Barcelona did open their campaign in the groups stage with three consecutive wins, besting every other side in this group, but their most recent Champions League result was a loss to Manchester City on the road.

That disappointing result will likely give them all the motivation they need to perform to their best against Celtic, and if they do it could be another walloping.

Celtic will need to hope that the home field advantage proves a big one if they are going to get an upset. And a little magic from Aussie Tom Rogic wouldn’t hurt either!
