French Barbarians 19-11 Wallabies XV

In the end a disappointing night for the Wallaby XV, they just never seemed to find a rhythm, they struggled at scrum time and in the end it was the side that was able to make the most of the tough pitch conditions that won the game.

The Wallaby side didn’t really seem to have any flow to their game, in fact they looked very disjointed and their scrum struggled on conditions not too dissimilar to AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Marika Koroibete set up Ben Mowen with a nice catch and pass to open up the scoring, but that was just about one of the only highlights for the Wallabies as they were completely outplayed by the French Barbarians.

The decision to go for goal from the Wallabies when down 12-8 with five minutes to go when they looked likely to score a try was a dumb move, and in the end the Barbarians were able to counter and seal a win.

It doesn’t bode well for a number of these players looking to crack into the Wallabies line-up against England next weekend, in the end the French Barbarians score a 19-11 win over the Wallaby XV.

A mix of youth and experienced campaigners will take to the field for the Wallabies XV mid-week tour game against the French Barbarians. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:45am AEDT.

Among the interesting inclusions of this Wallabies side is former skipper Ben Mowen who is part of the ‘old brigade’ named in the team. It’s his first time named in the Wallabies side since 2013, and we will also get a taste of what Marika Koroibete can bring to the 15-a-side game.

“With the Wallaby XV, we want to create a mix of experienced players as well as our developing players coming through,” Michael Cheika said.

“A lot of these lads have been with us over the past three weeks on tour and have been preparing for this Wallaby XV game as their Test match, especially against an international line-up that the French Barbarians will have.”

A few of the Wallabies’ Spring Tour squad have been named for this mid-week clash, including NSW pair Will Skelton and Tom Robertson.

That means that they are unlikely to play against Ireland in what will surely be an intriguing Grand Slam fixture, where if the Wallabies win they will face England with the chance to cap off an undefeated tour.

Cheika will be taking the night off as well with former Wallabies skills coach Scott Wisemantel guiding the team from the sidelines.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m excited by the potential of some of these young Australians coming through the ranks,” Wisemantel said.

“It’s a perfect setting for their development as well as my development as a coach.

“This week is a great opportunity not only for the players but also for the coaches and staff to show they can impress at the international level.”

Chris Whittaker, Morgan Turinui and Justin Harrison will be Wisemantle’s assistants.

This game is shaping like an entertaining encounter, and you can catch the live stream on Rugby.com.au, and of course enjoy the live blog right here on The Roar from 6:45am AEDT.
