When watching any type of sporting endeavour, the more athletic types among us have all said, or at least loudly thought to ourselves “I could do that!”

Well, the New Year is not that far away, so I thought I would plant the seed for your resolution and give you your top ten absolutely genuine, realistic chances of becoming a legitimate World Champion in 2017!

1. Air Guitar World Championships

Are you unable to play guitar but able to dance? The now Internationally famous Air Guitar World Championships are held in Oulu, Northern Finland at the end of August. You do have to win your National Championships to qualify for the finals, although there are some last chance events held over the three-day festival. If you fancy representing Australia you can always get more information here

2. World Egg Jarping Championships

Does Easter time egg-cite you? The World Egg Jarping Championships takes place on Easter Sunday every year in Peterlee, County Durham, England. The Heart of Oaks pub is the epicentre of Jarpers from all over the world. Participants select a boiled egg and use it throughout the competition. They then go head to head by tapping their eggs until one cracks. If your egg breaks then you’re out. The World Champion is the one who’s egg is still whole!

3. Egg Roulette World Championships

More eggy fun? If Egg-Jarping is a bit too sedate for you, you can always head to Swaton in Lincolnshire at the end of June. Swaton is the Egg Sports Capital of the World and hundreds of people from all over take part in the rather messy Egg Russian Roulette World Championships. Competitors again go head to head, this time with a half dozen box of eggs. One of the eggs is raw and as competitors take it in turns to slam the eggs into their forehead, the loser is the one that gets the raw egg splattered onto their head first! More information can be found here.

4. World Bog Snorkelling Championships

Can you swim? Well in that case, you might want to venture to Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid-Wales for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. A 60-metre long trench is dug in a peat bog and filled with water of a dubious nature. Competitors don the appropriate mask, snorkel and flippers and any other protective gear they feel necessary and proceed to swim two lengths of the bog. The world record, set by Englishwoman Kirsty Johnson is 1 minute 22 seconds set in 2014. You can enter online to compete.

5. Rolloff World Championships

Can you ride or even just sit on a bike? The Rolloff World Championships might just be your thing. Cyclists push off – using only one foot – and ride down a hill either as fast as they can or as far as they can. Fitness plays little part and body mass can even help you achieve more! The event takes place in Bundanoon, New South Wales in November and you can find out more information here.

6. World Black Pudding Throwing Championships

Can you throw? Anything? Anything at all? In Ramsbottom, Lancashire, England, the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships are held every September. Contestants hurl a black pudding at a pile of Yorkshire puddings that sit on a 20-foot-high plinth. The World Champion is the one who knocks down the most Yorkies. You can find all the information on the event here.

7. World Cow Chip Throwing Championships

Does the smell of cow pat bother you? In Oklahoma, the town of Beaver (yes, it really is called Beaver!) hosts the annual World Cow Chip Throwing Championships. 2017 will be the 48th edition. The chips are carefully hand-picked from neighbouring fields by the Cow Chip Throw President. “Chips are selected for size and symmetry. You want to do it on a day when it hasn’t rained as you really don’t want to end up drying them in your oven.” If you fancy taking on the Americans then make a beeline to Beaver in April. More beaver news can be found here.

Do you like drinking? Do you like pub games? Grab your best drinking buddy as this one is a team event. The World Series of Beer Pong is an annual event in Las Vegas and carries a cool first prize of $ 50,000 too. Think you can throw a ping pong ball into a beer cup from less than eight feet away? You can enter the June tournament here.

10. Pooh Sticks World Championships

Can you drop a stick into a creek from a bridge? Well, this might be your best chance at becoming the Pooh Sticks World Champion. Witney in Oxfordshire, England hosts the annual event on the first Sunday in June. The sport was written about in AA Milne’s Winnie the Pooh book in 1928. Competitors drop their sticks from the upstream side of the bridge into the water and the winner is the one whose stick emerges on the downstream side of the bridge first! You can find more information here.
