The end of the year brings with it plenty of discussion about who had the best past 12 months, and in keeping with the spirit of our site, deciding who wins in The Roar‘s Sports Awards 2016 is entirely up to you.

We’ve already had a couple of awards for you to sink your teeth into, starting with Sports Personality of the Year last Friday and Team of the Year yesterday. Now, it’s time for our third of six categories: Sports Media Personality of the Year.

While sport is mainly about the athletes, teams and fans, we do need people to present the broadcasts, tweet the results, and provide the latest analysis and opinion.

Missed a previous day’s award? There’s still time to vote!

» Sports Personality of the Year

As always, we’ve provided a shortlist of the finest and most noteworthy personalities in Australia’s sports media, but it’s up to you to decide who deserves the award.

Let’s run through the nominees.

Dennis Commetti

AFL – Channel Seven
Who better to start with than Dennis? After years behind the microphone, the legendary commentator decided to call it a day, making the 2016 AFL Grand Final his final call. Never shy of an astute observation or a cutting piece of wit, there’s no doubt Commetti’s dulcet tones will be missed next season.

Matthew Johns

Rugby League – Fox Sports
Known for his humorous approach to covering the footy, Johns had another successful year in 2016 with Fox Sports’ Monday Nights with Matty Johns.

Mel McLaughlin

Cricket/Olympics – Channel Ten/Channel Seven
After being dragged into the headlines through no fault of her own during the Big Bash, McLaughlin handled the furore around Chris Gayle’s antics like a true pro. Her coverage of the Big Bash itself was excellent, and she was also a key part of Channel Seven’s Rio Olympics coverage.

Erin Molan

Rugby League – Channel Nine
In what is surely one of the blokier sports going around, Molan has been an integral part of Channel Nine’s Footy Show. She also gained plenty of respect for her public campaign calling for an end to domestic violence in Australia.

Titus O’Reily

AFL – Social Media
O’Reily’s Twitter feed is one of the social media highlights of the AFL season. For someone who tweets so often, it is remarkable how regularly he manages to find the most amusing angle time and time again.

Yvonne Sampson

NRL – Channel Nine
Although she’s been covering the NRL for a while now, 2016 saw Sampson really come into her own in the host’s chair.

She also became the first woman to ever host Nine’s State of Origin broadcast this year in front of a lazy four million viewers.

Shane Warne

Cricket – Channel Nine/Social Media
A regular source of back-page news, Warney had a typically high-profile 2016. Whether it was playing poker, commentating with Channel Nine, releasing his own emojis or doing his best to chat up Emily Ratajkowski, the former leg-spinner was never too far from the headlines.

Gerard Whateley

AFL, Cricket, Horse Racing – ABC, Fox Sports
In a world where sport on television is often criticised for being a bit reductionist, Whateley has built a reputation on being noticeably articulate, whether it’s hosting AFL 360 or Offsiders or calling live action on radio for the ABC.
