I'm not leaving, says Roar coach Aloisi

By News / Wire

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has shot down reports he could defect to Adelaide United next season in the latest round of A-League psychological warfare.

Adelaide-born Aloisi and his assistant and brother, Ross Aloisi, are both coming out of contract and have been linked to a possible move to the Reds should Guillermo Amor depart at the end of the season.

The Roar suspect the news is an attempt from the Adelaide camp to unsettle their opponents ahead of Sunday’s clash at Suncorp Stadium.

Aloisi, who intends to stay in Brisbane for the long term, said there’s “no truth” to the story at all.

“I’ve never spoken to anyone from Adelaide United,” he said.

“And I’m in positive discussions with Brisbane Roar to extend my contract.

“For me, I feel we’ve only just started here – we had a good season on the pitch, we’ve started this season pretty well, but we feel there’s so much more growth within the football club and I want to be part of it.”

Aloisi said he hopes Henrique is given a warm reception by the Brisbane faithful when he makes his first appearance at Suncorp as an opposition player.

The 31-year-old was offered a new deal last season by the Roar but opted to move to Malaysia after seven seasons with the club.

However, he failed to settle in his new surrounds, tried and failed to secure a deal a deal to return to his old club, and made his A-League comeback with Adelaide instead.

Last week, he scored two long-distance screamers to steer the Reds to their maiden win of the season over Wellington Phoenix.

“We left on good terms and now he’s back, unfortunately not with us, but it’s good to have him in the A-League anyway,” Aloisi said.

Spanish winger Manuel Arana – the player who essentially replaced Henrique – has made only one start and is yet to show anything resembling the Brazilian-Australian’s quality output.

But far from being under pressure to produce, Aloisi said he was holding Arana back to ensure he is fully fit for Brisbane’s busy schedule in the new year, when their AFC Champions League qualification campaign will test squad depth.

“Arana’s going to be a very good for us. We’re being careful, we’ll give him bits now to make sure when he does play more regularly, that he’s ready to go,” he said.

STATS THAT MATTER
* Henrique faces off against his former team on the back of scoring his first brace since netting a hat trick in November 2014.
* Adelaide United are undefeated in their last three games against Brisbane Roar (W2, D1) including wins both at home and on the road.
* Brisbane Roar have ended their last four games in stalemate (all 1-1); only twice in A-League history has any team gone more games without a win or a loss.

Waz - Your surprise??? I have always been of the opinion,(very strong" that it is players who play games, coaches are only influencers, and actually have very limited effect on what goes on for the 90 minutes when the preconceived ideas can be undermined by an opposition.. I have no doubt that coaches all have a "grand plan" on which they think, or hope, their charges will perform but as you well know this does not always work, hence the team ,despite the plan ,loses. You go on to say this year the defence has improved but surely that has to be expected when one considers who is filling the second central position,,De Vere, replacing the two "stand--in" who were sharing the task formerly, plus of course Theo who has been showing exceptional form.. You mention McLaren, and yet I am tired of preaching he is a player who would perform so much better if he was playing "off" a big strong central striker. When I say this publicly I am reminded of how many he scored last year rather than speculate how many he could have scored with a little help. Watching the 'Nix game yesterday I found myself speculating how McLaren would perform beside the big ,tireless, physical Hamish Watson who can quite easily take on two centre backs while his speedy mates can get in and score goals.. However I don;t think we'll ever know. Every time I watch Melb City play I see a player, unburdened by his "Roar job", start in an environment where he is allowed to run free wherever his football brain takes him. His name-Brattan of course. Cheers jb.

Not to shoulder all the blame on to one person but we play 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 where the common denominator is the lone striker who needs to score. The lad has had the chances but his heads not in the right place for me, 4 goals in 8 games is good but he should be having a "bad season" like Berisha with 8 or 9 goals. Move beyond that and yes there's a few goals missing from elsewhere but really, Maccers could really have taken the pressure off the whole team by now ...

Waz it is safe to say that the current Roar team lack the penetration and or urgency that was developed in previous years. Is it the personnel or the coach or the club finances? We all see Maccers missing chances at quite an alarming rate which is similar to Berisha until last night. The problem with Brisbane Roar, unlike Victory, is no one else is picking up the slack. Borello is no Rojas and Oar is a huge disappointment (at present). Broich and Mackay have never been huge goal scorers so why not jiggle the squad about and give Daggers and Katabian a chance? It is part of the problem with our system in Australia that our youth are only given a go in dire circumstances. We do not naturally progress them instead we bring in average Spaniards that are not match fit and give them game time over our own youth.

That was pretty much what most Roar fans thought going in to this season but the public comments by his agent have turned many fans against Maccers who is, in a squad full of highly regarded players, well liked by fans. It now seems almost certain Maccers will leave possibly as early as three weeks time and where he ends up is critical to his career.

Maclaren---is a very good prospect; he is young enough to develop into a very good striker for club and country. I would think if anyone can guide Maclaren, it is the Aloisi brothers, who will bring the best out of the youngster eventually. He will be hot property in another season and take the big leap forward. Time is on his side to develop more composure in front of goal.

If you don't think I critisise "my club" then you need to read back over the last few months/years some of the stuff posted, it's rather churlish to say that lol You actually might be right on the change in style though, might be, but it's too soon to know. Roar last year exhibited some excellent football and were playing the same style you're now criticising they thrashed Victory 5-0 (and also lost 3-6 to Glory) the weakness was clearly an inability to defend when they had to, scoring 49 goals but conceding 40. So Aloisi has clearly had to wrestle with that conundrum plus there was (and still is) a distinct difference with Roar at home and the Roar results achieved away from home. So the team does not look comfortable in its new skin and, judging by the lack of celebration with Maclaren last week, may not even be unified. So the "style" being executed is unlikely to be Aloisi's choice because it's too erratic and inconsistent, what idiot coach would choose that as a style lol? It's more likely a function of a relatively inexperienced coach struggling to implement his game plan So I think it would be foolish to assume these first 9 games are "the style" Aloisi wants his team to play. It's entirely possible his team isn't executing team instructions as well as they should be, not an uncommon problem for a new coach in which case I think we need to give it time before passing judgement. That was the basis of my response.

Waz, last year was transitional. Hardly a season as a yard stick. JA's game is taking shape and it is not an attacking style. This year the setup has gone even more conservative even when playing at home. Roar are sitting deeper than ever. That is not hard to see. Waz, I commend you for your loyalty but ditch the one-eyed 'never criticise your club' approach and see the facts for what they are.

jb. I'm not sure why your "surprised" by the comment but then what you go on to write is perfectly sensible. I just thought the earlier posters were being a bit harsh on poor old JA who navigated a team to within a whisker of the Plate and GF last year. Credit where credits due there, especially playing some good football along the way. This season the defence has been improved and a new tactic deployed, defending deeper and countering on the break. You are a shrewd observed and will no doubt have noticed Maclaren has scored 4 in 8 games but that masks the number of chances he has butchered so far this season - I'd say a further 10-15 throughout 7 of those games, not just "chances" but opportunities any striker would be expected to put away which must have the coaching team shaking their heads. The best comparison would be last nights WSW/Victory game - very similar to the Roar game with the difference being Berisha v Maclaren whereas the young man in Orange squandered his chances, Berisha didn't. And it was the same in the city game last week, Maclaren just isn't quite there this season. If you recall we had a discussion after the CCM/Roar game where Maccers should have got 3 and at that time it looked Ike early season rust, whereas now it looks like Maccers is distracted by the increasingly public nature of his contract negotiations and where his next club will be. So I'd say the style JA has is working, but not all his personnel are.

Waz - you surprise me somewhat in this comment. You and I have discussed before the fact that both JA and MM inherited decent squads of players who had actually "ruled the roost" in the HAL for a few seasons. I thought the outcome of those discussions was that despite their relatively low coaching experience they did a reasonable job keeping the results "flowing", to me more a job of keeping these proven players happy than actually contributing a lot into the way they played the game. Change has occurred of course keeping in mind that tactically the game has moved on from AP's days, but still the backbone of a team is there,Theo,North,De Vere,& Mackay (and until this season Steffanuto and Henrique) all experienced in their own right so,with the additions of say Corona, and or Holman ,the team is not going to be severely weakened. Also when one considers the number of ex-Roar players playing in other HAL teams it only drives home this message even more. Can you imagine the present team playing with Berisha,Nichols,Franjic,Henrique and Geria thrown into the mix,the league would have been won by now no matter who the coach !!!!! Cheers jb..

I don't know how yourself and TheVolley can forget last season when Aloisi created a very attacking side but defensively fragile team? This season he seems to have somewhat over corrected for last seasons deficiencies but problems seem to be more issues with team cohesion going forward than a real deviation in philosophy. Have Roar moved on from Anges possession based style, absoloutly they have and thank god they have - Mariners are demonstrating where that gets you and Adelaide won the title last year by defending deep and hitting quickly on the counter attack which, at the very least, is a style JA has demonstrated he can coach a team in (and had Maclaren converted more of his chances this season JA wouldn't be recieving the criticism). All is not well with the Roars performances this season of course but JA isn't far away from challenging for the title for a second successive season, I'dhave thought Adelaide would see Aloisi as an ideal replacement for Amor tbh

Yep, that's about it. I can't see why they would want Aloisi based on what he is doing with Brisbane.

They are lazy jb, even the dedicated football ones. Henrique potentially re-signing for Roar became a choice between Holman and Henrique apparently - both couldn't fit under the cap so Holman was the choice. I'm hoping we don't regret that today because Ricky is a fine finisher

Waz - This is "coach -speak" stuff created by journos who are too lazy to seek out real news or worse still don't have the football intelligence on where to source real "news". Interesting comment about Henrique, after being used as a successful substitute for 2 seasons during which he got himself Australian citizenship,he could not be lured back to Roar ,despite what we know about financial hardship. Now surely there is a story in that occurrence. We can bring and return players from Spain (some unused) but we can't find the funds to increase a long time servant a few bob.??? Do our scribes chase stuff and comments like this? or is it just too easy to phone up a coach and get the usual platitudes from them. jb.

If this is true, then Adelaide with have to be prepared for JA to turn Adelaide into a one-goal-a-game counter attacking team. A prized poach I think not.

Bit of devilment from Adelaide on this one lol, but they'd be better off focusing on securing Amor before it leads to another Reds player exodus. I hope amor re-signs for them - the HAL will be better for it, but until he does few players will be settled.
