Eddie Jones to stand down as England coach after World Cup tilt

By News / Wire

Eddie Jones will step down as England rugby union coach after the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The Australian has guided world No.2 England to an unbeaten year with 13-straight victories including four wins over the Wallabies.

But he has cited the job’s mental demands as the reason for his decision as he plots England’s bid to lift the Webb Ellis trophy for the first time since 2003.

“Four years is enough,” Jones told the UK Times.

“It is emotionally draining.”

He took up the role last year after four years at the helm of Japan.

In the meantime, Jones has set his sights on a second-straight Six Nations title next year, as well as dislodging New Zealand from the top of the world rankings.

“England should be the most dominant team in Europe. We should think we can beat everyone,” he said.

“I want us to have that attitude, ‘we are dominant, the biggest team in Europe and we play like that; like the old Manchester United side, the same as the All Blacks’.

“The All Blacks have a couple of points’ head-start in games because people expect to be beaten by them.

“I want our team to have that. I think we are getting there.”

60 caps over a 7 year period. What more do you want?

They wouldn't select Piutau because he's not playing Super rugby. That's exactly why he's not considered. He was a starting All Black when he announced his overseas plans and hasn't been considered since. So it's not a matter of might. That is definitely a won't.

Lancaster is an example where a philosophical, intelligent approach and 'Theory' only gets you so far. He was too much the nice guy, full of good intention and dedication, but didn't know how to push the team beyond its limits, ruffle feathers of those who might disagree with him. He wasn't able to get into the hearts and souls of his players and draw out that mongrel, where Jones went to work on that straight away and got immediate results, selecting Hartley a master stroke in terms of the attitude he wanted out on the field. Rugby is at its heart a viscious game and Lancaster failed to turn over every stone in that respect.

Cynical Play

Roar Rookie

Your last point is a good one. It staggers me how many Roarers, mostly those North of the Wall, bleat for the sacking of Capt Cheik. None of them put forward any rational argument for an alternate coach. None. Because there are very few of the current Oz coaches with the experience and vision.

Cheika has the cattle to be a top 3 side and is. His team is not as good as Eng or NZ. So Cheikas team is sitting about where it should be as far as cattle go. However next year the team should kick on after the transitional period and players such as McMahon, Coleman, DHP, Arnold, Kerevi, Timani and Hodge develop and make the team theirs. And Cheikas gameplan, as you call it, is not his, it is forced upon his team by the expectations of Australian fans and the need to attract new fans. But knock down another coach, Im sure a whole bunch of quality coaches would be lining up for the Wallaby job. Sure the Ausie puplic has hung the last 4 coaches out to dry and sure it is as close to career suic1de as there is in international rugby but who wouldnt want to be forced to play a certain way in a coaching role that is infamous for copping unjust fan and media hatred.

No. You dont. Like Henry and Hanson, coaches learn from mistakes and Lancaster has not coached since his Eng stint. But people who cant wrap their head around this will never get it. OK people, coaches never get any better and never improve. They stay the same forever. So silly but as Ive said, this is the internet.

So your objection is to the money they make? No contribution to the code? Well after 60 caps theyve made a contribution and will continue to do so when they help Aus do well at test level. Would you stop NBA players playing for Aus? Would you stop our track and field athletes based overseas from representing Aus? As Ive said, only NZ and England select from within their own countries and Eng probably wouldnt select anyone outside of Eng anyway and NZ might select 1 (Piutau). The Giteau law allows for long time contributers to continue playing for Aus when in the past they would have been completely lost to the game in Aus. It keeps Wallabies in the game so they can reach that 60 tests. It has not prompted any players to leave after 60 tests. The whole idea of it is to keep players here longer.

Cheika has the cattle yet his gameplan "the Australian" has not worked. Henry and Hansen didnt have quality players! Cheika's should quit now!

Lancaster looks very happy in his current role at Leinster working with young players with the right attitude and coaching defence. He has the options of approaching Connacht for Pat Lam's job or staying in Leinster. He will have a lot of lee way in either role and not have to deal with the English press

So an Aus player only has to reach 60 tests and he is out of the country playing for massive money and still getting selected for the wallabies, yet he gives nothing back to the ccode? I dont like that idea. NZ rugby is successful because all levels are heading for the same target. A NH coach is not interested what type of rugby the Aus national coach wants to play is he/she

We have all watched Eddie over the last nine months and with his success in Japan with the Orange Bosoms. His stature has quickly changed; he is no-longer a silhouette in the shades but a coach who is highly regarded by the English. He is enjoying the attentions and delivering the one line sanctimonious statements, which have reduced Cheika’s goodwill to near zero. If he can maintain the current momentum and prolongs the longevity of some players, England would have to be a consideration in 2019. The Giteau law has deliver nothing for OZ rugby and if Cheika continues to explore that avenue, the young gifted players will start to turn away. W Genia played standouting rugby by local standards, true, but like Pocock will he be around in 2019? We have two, perhaps three young 9’s that need to be tested and they can’t be tested sitting in the bleachers. If we contemplate that a large number of Wallabies were not born in this country and yet Cheika continues this enthusiasm for foreign imports. Down at the local level folk will quickly become disgruntled, in principal I don’t have a problem but many do. Therefore, I sadly find some areas of the game in disarray. ,

Not really. Leaving out some of their best players from abroad has seen results pummel and they're pretty much guaranteed themselves to be in the pool of death in 2019

So Cheika is no better at coaching than when he first started coaching? Lancaster hasnt improved? How do you know? Im sure there were people back when Henry and Hansen were struggling with Wales saying that coaches dont improve because Henry hasnt. I guess this is the internet. Coaches improve and if you havnt noticed Jones is no different.

I find it remarkable how you can be so inconsistent and bias without realising it. So a local 34 year old is the future but Genia and Beale are not? Are you concerned about age or where they play because you act as if a local selection cant be old. Nobody in Super Rugby older than Beale and Genia? Your problem is your bias against the idea. This causes you to try and rationalise it by treating the Giteau law players completely differently. Thats obvious. A Giteau law player is too old but a local player of an older age is OK. A Giteau law player plays bad and the law is wrong but a local selection plays bad and thats OK. And on it goes.

Same with Lancaster. By the end he'd run out of ideas...yet clearly had the players, as Jones proved.

Right you are. I guess their policy is to only select from the Super comp. Which is a shame. They could have used Figallo, Ayerza and Lobbe. I guess that would be a step backwards though.
