Ivan Cleary no clearer on Mitchell Moses switch

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary is undecided on whether Mitchell Moses will transfer mid-season to Parramatta, but insists speculation won’t affect his performance against them on Monday.

Moses is already understood to have signed with the Eels for next season, but requested a mid-season release to the NRL club last week.

That was originally denied by the Tigers, however speculation has since mounted that he will be granted a release following the Easter Monday ANZ Stadium blockbuster.

But Cleary said he was yet to make a call on when Moses would be leaving the club – let alone if it would happen in the coming days.

“I really haven’t thought about it too much at all,” Cleary said on Sunday.

“It was a bit of a shock what happened last week. I’ve got enough to worry about before worrying about things like that.

“Those thoughts will come to my head when they come in.”

Moses was one of the Tigers’ best players in their upset 26-16 win over North Queensland in Townsville last week.

And Cleary accepts that all eyes will again be on the 22-year-old when he comes up against his future club.

But he said he hadn’t spoken to the club’s chief playmaker about the current situation, and didn’t expect it to be an issue come kick off.

“I guess for Mitch it’s crossed his mind we’re playing Parramatta,” Cleary said.

“He probably thought about it earlier in the week after it was done last week. But for the rest of the week and heading into tomorrow the focus will be on his job at the Wests Tigers.

“His job is here to play for the Wests Tigers and his teammates. It’s going on elsewhere in the NRL.”

And all of what you have said ignores the fact they are "negotiating" a release. So both sides need to agree on conditional or unconditional terms suitable to each party and then part company at a specified time. All the IP belongs to the Tigers. Sure Moses is attached to some and has inside knowledge of some. However, all of that should be factored in to whatever compensation the Tigers get from Parra. If the upside of letting Moses walk, trashing a stack of merch and letting the game plans of a sacked coach go with him is greater than the cost of same, then make a commercial decision and do it. EG; if the Tigers were to get a good forward and $200K then they are well ahead in the deal. And Moses' awareness of what Cleary will do with the Tigers is minimal given Cleary is 2 weeks into the gig. He knows nothing of the future Tigers plans or who will make up the side. I doubt Cleary has even decided what game he wants to them play until he has decided on and signed his own list. EG, if they don't get Tedesco signed and find they are out in the market for say Dugan, then the role from the back changes heaps.

I made quite a significant reply yet it seems to have gone into the ether. It ran along these lines: Look up intellectual property rights & the concept of 'trade secrets' which are covered therein. Have a look at the WT's online shop for ideas of where some of this might apply to merchandise etc. Think about where 'trade secrets' might apply to the way the teams feel about their plays, players & the direct opposition. I also explained how your example of an electrician changing jobs could be subject to IP & 'trade secrets'. Hopefully it pops up here as a reply at some point as it would make the above a lot clearer & save you some work as I included several links.

Whats he going to do Damo? Sell the Tigers SUCCESSFUL secrets to Parramatta? As you are trying to do it from a business model, are you allowed to leave your job and still work in the same industry? Think of all the trades...If a Sparkie leaves his job is he no longer allowed to be a Sparkie for a set time? A retail worker not allowed to work in another shop? Not so sure thats going to work somehow. Maybe he had a clause in his contract about the coaching staff? They get rid of coaches, Players, and staff whenever they want....Just like they do in business.

Here's a deal, businesses have intellectual property rights etc to ensure that employees can't leave & impact them immediately in the market place, so by all means let Moses go, but he won't be paid by the current club & his wages for the rest of the season must be paid by the new club but to ensure the game plan etc of the old club is protected, he can train but cannot play until next season (not in first grade anyway). He's at the new club, influencing things & having an impact but not to the detriment of the old club. Old club saves money in the short term (comes in handy paying lower graders who come up into firsts too often) & new club gets the benefit of having the new guy on board early & I'm sure they can work something out regarding pay given he is ineligible for firsts. Old club gets rid of a guy who doesn't want to be there, new club gets him on board early & away we go. I'm sure there will be details to work out but if businesses can do it why can't footy clubs ?
