Valiant Victory silence the Roar, through to grand final

By Samuel Ashton / Roar Guru

The Melbourne Victory are through to the A-League Grand Final after an impressive and dominant performance over a disappointing Brisbane Roar outfit.

The Victory were class from start to finish, pressuring Brisbane and preventing them from playing the possession football that the Roar love playing.

The first half was completely dominated by the Melbourne outfit who could have easily had 2-3 goals on another day before the half time whistle.

Brisbane played better in the second half and created some chances but like the first half, the Victory were simply brilliant and by the 70th minute they had pulled ahead through Besart Berisha.

The Victory went on to win 1-0 and secure a spot in the Grand Final against Sydney FC.

The first half started how the game would end up being like for the entire 90 minutes, with the Victory first to every loose ball and utterly dominant in the middle of the park.

Berisha and Rojas had chances with on another day would have pulled the Melbourne outfit ahead.

However, just like last weekend, Jamie Young was the hero for Brisbane keeping them in the game throughout the match.

The pressure by the Victory was brilliant, who prevented the Roar from playing their natural, possession-based game.

Despite their dominance though, the Melbourne-based outfit couldn’t get a goal on the board and it was a scoreless game at the interval.

The second half went just like the first with the Victory simply outclassing Brisbane across the park. Eventually the pressure tolled on Brisbane and the Victory scored through Berisha to advance to the Grand Final.

Final score
Melbourne Victory 1
Brisbane Roar 0

I don't think you will get Maclaren because his agent is looking for a bigger payday however you can have Aloisi, actually both of them and I will throw in a Craig Moore for good measure.

For those interested, Aloisi's record (across HAL, ACL and FFA Cup) with the Roar is Games 67 Wins 30 Draws 16 Losses 21 Goals For 105 Goals Against 89 Goal Difference +16. I think this is decent enough to reserve judgement for a little while longer. With the well documented squad issues (Broich/MacLaren/Oar/Holman), we will see next year what he is worth as a coach. I hope that if Roar get off to a decent start next year, all of you who suggest Aloisi can't coach will give credit where credit is due. Time will tell.

You know Brisbane has 3 championships and 2 premierships...many more than the Wanderers...yeah? We breed success as much as anyone else....well actually only one club has more success than us.

Chopper - I don't think I that is the "first time" as we've had discussions on this page before about how much the cap will be. We still don't know. However, the clubs find out on May 2nd how much the cap will increase by, and to paraphrase Broichs words in his Marco interview "the club asked me to wait until they knew what budget they had for next year before they could make an offer, I decided not to wait". Why he decided not to wait is debatable... But I think it goes to your last point, I don't think the question on Broich is a financial one, even though it's reported he wants a full salary to stay on, I think it's purely a football decision based more on age/fitness than actual ability and yes - the way Aloisi wants to play the game dies not suit Broich. Take the cap away and I don't think we'd see Broich in orange next year. If the cap goes up by $300k that's not a lot, it may go up to $3.3m which adds another $700k. Roar have 4 visa slots open and maybe as much as a million in available cap; if Aloisi spends that wisely he'll have a very good team next year.

Waz that's the first time you have admitted the cap will be increased next year and all the time backing the club's view that they could not fit Broich into the cap. However with the Broich saga I now believe there is more to it than finances. The way Roar now play is contrary to Broich's belief because he wants to play football. You may respond as usual about his age but he is still better than any other player Brisbane have even on one leg.

RBB, Can't argue over the club being poorly run, I'm not sure Mckay being signed as an Australian marquee is the best example though - he's been good for this club, very good. But we are poorly run, no doubt about it, and we do keep producing great players that other clubs want, that's a problem if the cap though not BRFC. The question will be can JA use the increased cap next season and produce a balanced side to win the title?

Oar & Holman have had some good patches this year, just not consistent enough. But they are signed up so JA will have to make them work. As for yesterday's game, I've long held the view that Mackay and Holman shouldn't be picked in the same team - two similar in style of bring everywhere and nowhere sometimes. Ones enough.

I think you will find Mckay was signed under the Australian marquee & hence Berisha wouldn't qualify.

Nemesis, I think Maccers would fit in well with Victory's front line. Less so with Roar who are caught between what style of play to adopt and what our best formation is. If you watched yesterday's game you will see how isolated Maclaren can become, that doesn't happen with Berisha.

The poor decisions of the past are still being felt by Brisbane Roar. The decision to keep someone like MacKay as a Marquee player and allow their best player (Berisha) to sign with Melbourne Victory is something that I still can't get over. The same decision is being made yet again with Maclaren easily their best player over the last 2 seasons yet they make the decision to keep Holman and Oar as Marquee players, simply baffling. The same mutterings about Berisha leaving are the same things being said about MaClaren. There is a reason why Brisbane players keep moving to Victory and succeeding, because the club as whole doesn't know what its doing. I look forward to next year when MaClaren bangs them in against Brisbane for whoever he decides to sign with. I hope he celebrates just as hard as Berisha did when he scored the winner as well. I am sure it will be a satisfying feeling.

If Brisbane fans don't want Jamie MacLaren, I'm sure he'll be embraced by any other ALeague team. Strong rumour seem to be he'll move to Victory as replacement for Berisha who is likely to accept a final big pay day in China. Likewise John Aloisi. Aloisi did good work with Victory's NPL teams and he'd be a good replacement for Kevin Muscat, who needs to move on from his current role. He's been with Victory for 12 years as player & coach and, regardless of the result on Sunday, Muscat needs new experiences if he wants to take his coaching to the next level; and Victory needs a fresh approach.

What about Holman Waz, he was terrible and will be a marquee next season along with Oar and I don't think either of them are marquee standard, considering this was the biggest game of the year for them so far that's when you expect your best players to fire. JA can blame the ACL for some of them being tired but really, a thirty odd game season is not a large season when you compare it to other leagues around the world.

Agree, Waz. On all counts. McClaren's goals scored total flatters him hugely. Will not be sad to see him go. As for JA - well, my views are known. I don't like what he's done to our club. Route 1 hoofball. But we're stuck with him and his brother, and with the two dreadful marquees they've signed.

No, Broich is toast now. The only argument is sentiment for a former player which is why we ended up with Oar to be honest.

I don't care. Borrello can't waste oxygen on the right wing and argue "it's okay, I'm cheap". I get the impression Borrello is being played on the hope of a transfer fee more than ability.

Waz but only one of them will be getting marquee wages next year.

Mathematically, Broich cannot have much more pay than Oar if Broich plays next year. The salary cap is 2.6 million. If divided by 33 players, the average pay is around 80 K. Then, is reasonable to say that a grade A player receives a pay of 200 K. Should Oar's pay is much less than that of Broich's, Oar's pay is just a fraction of what Broich ask at 400 K a year. Would Oar's pay be just 100 K a year? Unless the management is real bad, a marquee player's pay has to be higher than and at least 300 K a year. Reportedly, Brisbane Roar just can pay Maclaren 200 K a year. So, Oar's pay must at least be between 300 to 400 K. If Oar's pay is just 200 K, there is no need to pay him outside the salary cap.

The Volley......this observation is the most overlooked fact facing the Roar next season. Broich would offer more on a 1 year deal than Oar by a country mile.
