Behind the Barriers: Five bets for the weekend

By Adam Page / Roar Guru

It was a bit of a stinker for the five bets last time around with Carzoff not suited by the tempo. Here are my five best bets for the weekend.

Bet One
Win: Warwick Farm, Race One, No. 5: Awesome Pluck

A beauty for the Jenny Graham yard. Trialed up well prior to debuting at Taree and, gee, you won’t see a better debut win this time of year Australia wide.

He absolutely trotted up and his time was near identical to the other 1000m race, but he really could have smashed the clock. Trialed here last week and again looked outstanding. Just wins on potential.

Bet Two
Win: Warwick Farm, Race Nine, No. 14: Nonpareil

Nonpareil is a smart filly from the Godolphin camp who has been given a three-week break since racing over 1200m at Rosehill. I thought she was very brave in defeat behind Test The World, who franked the form seven days later.

Good record here and the claim for Adkins is a big tick. Lack of opposition sees her as the one to beat.

Bet Three
Win: Flemington, Race Two, No. 1: Killarney Kid

Really keen on this bloke. His three runs back from a break have been very good, the latest coming over the Valley mile when flashing home to run a close-up fifth to Petrology. Has since been tuned up with a sharp win in the hurdles at the Bool. Really keen on him back in this grade.

Bet Four
Win: Doomben, Race Nine, No. 3: Eat My Trust

He ran an enormous race here two weeks back for the Matty Dunn yard. He was tardy away and got back to near last on a somewhat leaders track and to his credit, did a very good job to get as close as he did.

Provided we get an even level playing field here, he’ll take some holding out late and is the best on the Doomben card.

Bet Five
Win: Gawler, Race Seven, No. 7: Dollar for Dollar

Dollar for Dollar looks a standout on the Gawler card. A Tony McEvoy-trained galloper who was backed as unbeatable when resuming at Balaklava a couple of weeks back and despite a few nervous moments in the straight, the big striding horse went right on with it late and was strong to the line.

Up to 1500m is perfect and this looks his race.

Like your Nonpareil selection Adam ...with 53.5kgs she will be charging home, and if you can get the $5.00 EW she is a golden bet as she won't be out of three thats for sure.

Finals Day at Flemington is a great winters day of racing. The Winter Chamionchips at 1600 metres has solid pace, and looks very competitive. Amovatio a little unlucky last run, carrys top weight, doesn't win out of turn but in saying that, this field just about has this trait. $9 rating for mine. Tsarhitsi will have to cross from wide barrier, then run out the 1600. Big ask even being in form. $12 rating Petrology will settle back away from pressure, has handy form lines, weighted ok. I expect a big run. $10 rating Sovereign Nation is a flukers chance, must be fitter now, and this is open. $21 Loyalty Man. This runner looked flat last start, but my hunch is he really needed more ground... He gets that here. The mile is his go. Fit now, ride could be the key, not to race too close to speed. $9 rating Cosmic Lights is in stronger race, but a lightweight chance in open race. $21 rating R9 The Silver Bowl Final for 3yos So far with this lot, there seems to be no standout performer. The spoils have been shared around. Urban Ruler is in great form, has impressed. Looks to have to work from well back here. Can do it? High rater for mine. But not doing any cartwheels about him either. Looks unders of what I've seen around. $6 rating. Greviste has been up a while. Hot n cold prospect for mine. $12 rating My Paisan. This horse flew last race to win. Should get nice run on my map. But this stronger. Maybe still has more to give, but can't rate him better than a $9 chance. Cannot Be Serios is in good enough form to win this, just needs nice run from rear. $10 rating Wayanka only a flukers chance, dist doubt. Maps for awkward run. $34 rating. Willi Willi has a recent win on board, looks to race with cover. much stronger, slight chance $21 rating First Approach chased Willi Willi, is fitter, anonther slight chance runner. $21 rating Good luck punters on a very Competitive days racing
