North ready to fork out for stars

By News / Wire

North Melbourne are ready to fork out more than $15 million to secure the services of Richmond star Dustin Martin and GWS youngster Josh Kelly, News Corp Australia has reported.

Martin and Kelly would each be offered long-term deals worth in excess of $1m each year with reports of a nine-year-offer for Kelly, who is 22, and six for the 26-year-old Martin.

The club would not comment on the double bid.

“What I will say is that we were decisive last year in making sure we explored every option and nothing has changed,” Joyce told the Herald Sun.

“We will explore every single option available to us … and we will make sure any prospective move ties in directly with our strategic goal of winning our fifth premiership.”

North are getting John Longmire and Brad Scott to Sydney in a straight swap . Apparently franklin heeny and Kennedy will follow. Also the swans are relocating to Auckland.

Nah... If they get into trouble, they'll get James Brayshaw back and he'll get it all back on track. He never got the accolades he deserved at the helm of NM...or the Footy Show. You don't have to like people for them to be good at their jobs.

North will be the next Fitzroy if they don't relocate to Tasmania. Will die out if they stay in Melbourne. Can't see them winning another premiership with their list.

North gambled on the likes of Dal Santo and Waite. Came up snake eyes I am afraid. What they have to do now is take their medicine, bottom out and rebuild with youth like Melbourne, Carlton and St Kilda had to do or Kangaroos will wallow for years at the bottom. They are not a Carlton that can afford to do it either. Too many years and they might end up having to relocate.

1.2 million is not too big in the scheme of things. The only other big expense player is Neale but he has recently re-signed and the big costs won't be there for a few years. That is also the case with many of our young stars who have already signed again for a few years. Fyfe, to a great degree, has only picked up some of the released Pav salary space. Lots of goodies available. Most of that will be used to maintain the existing burgeoning list. Not much new needed...Hogan? Patton? SP(P or S)? Bontempelli? Jack Martin?

North, with its 9 debutants this year, have a much brighter future than both Richmond and Hawthorn... Hawthorn, especially, will be a bottom 6 club for about 5 years before actual draft picks kick in again. They can't trade in because they have nothing tradeworthy.

Totally agree Horrie and I think you've got the number right, six clubs is what Victoia needs. It's a complex situation though and not one easily fixed. Victorians certainly do have their heads in the sand though,if you speak to most they can't even see how Victorian centric the league is let alone the fact it's really just an expanded VFL competition rather than one that's truly national.

I think, if the truth were known, we'd find Freo has not been throwing many at key forwards over the years. Talk of Casboult, Cloke...ridiculous. That was only ever silly stuff from Hagdorn, Hardie and on-line speculators from the east who had no idea what Freo has on its list. Rumour and reality are poles apart. They were interested in Clark and later on Hogan.

Peter,Hawthorns success has certainly helped,I feel their decision to move out to Waverley also had a bit to do with their growth. Some of the decisions made at board level really helped Hawthorns growth in the outer eastern suburbs. I know St.Kilda also moved to Wavrley but they had already expanded their demographic by moving to Moorabbin which saw them being embraced by the Southern suburbs, so they didn't really have the same connection with the east that Hawthorn seemed to. A club like North would probably benifit from relocating to somewhere like Cranbourne, but with ground rationalisation that benefit has passed now as training facilities is a far cry from playing actual games in a particular region/area. There's something about North that appears unattractive and it could be something as simple as their colours or having a kangaroo as their mascot. It's certainly a problem for North that they've never been an attractive club for whatever reason, despite being pretty successful.

It could actually work Peter. Doubt it will happen though.

That rumour is simply that. Nonetheless if it transpired, I'd expect some Melbourne clubs to go off their rockers. Eddiehead would lead the chorus of moaning. There are 9 Melbourne clubs is probably 3 too many. Just 3 will make the finals this year. Doubt either Kelly or Martin will sign up to a cellar dweller.

North are destined for 3-4 years languishing at the bottom unless they get rid of Scott. It won't make any difference who plays for them while he is calling the shots. Long term future looks uncertain if this "rebuild" fails so they need to buy a decent coach asap. Paul Roos would be perfect.

Hmmm......at least they can afford it. It's not like there's not anyone else on their list worth a million a year - apart from big Ben Brown. His game and kicking against Port last week was stellar! Perhaps Martin, D, and Kelly, J. could sign up and accelerate the demise of the club with a fiery round of inter-club jealousies and player mistrust. Toss in Pittard, J. and the Power fans wouldn't mind the much more settled match day nerves. Works for me.

Johno you also have weather we are jealous of...but has the big Fyfe contract ruled you out now?....Surely the Hawks have blown it already with the O'Meara deal and won't have the salary cap space now? people forget they've landed some good ones but also wasted some...Jono O'rourke third year now and can't get a game, Vickery of course was a strange one....I hear they are interested in Jesse White now and Jesse hasn't been able to establish himself yet at either the Swans or the Pies.

Well David C if the Age can ever get something right Brad Scott will go to the Pies at the end of the season? Straight swap for Bucks do you think?

Scott will get offers from other clubs which he should take. North need a fresh start for their rebuild.

Martin will do a Fyfe when he's ready and re-sign with the tigers. Kelly might move on but he could still sign with GWS for another 2 years to get a flag before moving on.
