Match preview:

Jarryd Hayne and the Gold Coast Titans will be looking to put a torrid week off the field behind them when they host the struggling Canterbury Bulldogs in a game without finals implications. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 3pm (AEST).

The Titans’ season has gone from bad to worse over the last few weeks, with a falling out between Hayne and coach Neil Henry played out in the media.

On Monday, Henry was sacked from the club. In the eyes of many, it was a bad move, but it was clear Hayne and Henry couldn’t co-exist.

The Gold Coast club will retain Hayne for 2018, who is on $1.2 million per season and struggling, while assistant coaches Craig Hodges and Terry Matterson take over for the final two games of the season.

So often, we see teams with a fresh face at the helm win the following week, but the Titans are a basket case right now. Many players have lost interest, with their defence leaking a ridiculous 126 points in the last three games.

While Hayne was out last week, and will be joined in his return by Queensland front rower Jarrod Wallace this week, it’s hard to see how that turns the Titans around, even against a struggling Bulldogs attack.

Reference has to be made to the Canterbury attack because it’s the worst in the competition by a considerable margin. In 22 games, they have scored 308 points at an average of 14 per game – even Newcastle, who sit last, have scored 382 this season.

Their structure is woeful, and they look like a club playing without direction under Des Hasler, who must be under pressure to retain his job.

Canterbury may well have had their best performance of the season last weekend though, running up 30 points against the Sea Eagles to score a win which somehow keeps them out of the bottom four.

Will Hopoate has been a spark for the blue and white this season, with three try assists in the win over Manly.

But you only have to look back to the previous fortnight, when they lost to South Sydney and Parramatta, to see where the Dogs’ level has been at during the second half of the season.

Canterbury have made no changes to the 17 for this match, however, Sam Kasiano, Greg Eastwood and Josh Reynolds are all named on the reserves list.

Prediction
The Bulldogs showed something last week and that’s more than can be said for the Titans. It’ll be error-ridden and low-scoring, but Canterbury should win.

Bulldogs by 8.

Ponga is on a smaller salary and under a larger cap, not to say he can't potentially fail but the Knights have developed some good depth and aren't being forced to move regular first graders on through his signing like the Titans were with Hayne. Brownie won't hesitate to leave someone off the park if they're not up to it anyway; he's already shown that.

The worry for the Knights is the trap they have fallen into, like so many teams before, of thinking that a team can be built - or rebuilt around one marquee player. Titans certainly haven't built an empire around Hayne, so what makes Newcastle think they can build a team around the massively overpriced and hardly a 1st grader yet - Ponga? He'll be the Sandow at Parra, not good enough to play firsts, but paid too much to leave him off the park.

Curious how when a big business fails, questions get asked of the Board Members. Titans and the Knights are currently in a death spiral, and what questions are being asked of the Board Members that run these clubs? No questions huh? None at all? Does the NRL have total absolution when it comes to the running of these clubs? Is that really fair? IMO just another one of a seemingly endless conflicts of interest.

Inconsistent refereeing like barely punishing Jarrod Wallace for attempting to decapitate the opposition halfback?

Once again the inconsistent refereeing against the Gold Coas titans ruins the match. It's hard enough to win any game in the NRL against any team but if you're playing against the inconsistent refereeing like the Gold Coast continually face they never ever get the rub of the green from the refs that is virtually impossible to win

FULLTIME Agnatius Passi back from the kick-off, before the Titans spread left and Zillman is almost taken into touch. Max King back to the middle, before there is an inside ball for Wallace and he goes over halfway. They go right, make an error and the Bulldogs win it. The siren rings out in the background at Robina and the Titans lose again, despite a much better second half. The Bulldogs have two straight and will be out to rain on the Dragons chances of a top eight finish next Sunday to close the season. Gold Coast Titans 14 Canterbury Bulldogs 26

78' - TRY TITANS, PHILLIP SAMI Another short kick-off, and this time it's Phillip Sami who comes up with it before beating about six or seven to be tackled ten metres out, centre of the field. Taylor to Proctor on the right, then it's Boyle back to the middle on the third. Back to the left from Roberts to Hayne who throws a cut out ball for Zillman. He goes to ground, doesn't get touched, offloads for Sami and he dives under the defence to score. Consolation try. Titans 14 Bulldogs 26
