Richmond’s grand final win on Saturday has brought 2017 to a close, but now the silly season is just four days away as free agency opens on Friday.

For those of you like me who love this time of year it’s an exciting prospect as we look forward to seeing what moves the eighteen clubs make to take a step further in 2018.

This is a crucial time of year. Last October Richmond traded in three mature players in Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis. I gave them an A+ in my trade period report card, and two days ago they all became premiership players for the club.

There’s always plenty of rumour and innuendo in the lead-up to trade time, and here I’ve put together all the most pertinent rumours, club-by-club, on who is set to swap guernseys this offseason.

You can also keep up to date with all the latest news on our AFL trade rumours page, which will be updated live throughout the next three weeks.

Of course, don’t take anything here as gospel! The trade period always throws us a few curveballs and I’m sure there are plenty to come in 2017.

Jake Lever – Set to request a trade to Melbourne by all reports. Adelaide reportedly want two first-round picks in return, but Melbourne have only offered a first and a second. Collingwood may try to swoop on the deal with a better offer. Out of contract.

Daniel Menzel – Geelong have offered him a one-year deal that would be a paycut on his 2017 season, so he will consider his options. Unrestricted free agent.

Steven Motlop – Port Adelaide, Adelaide and West Coast the three clubs with serious interest him, and he seems likely to move with Geelong not making any effort to retain him. Was previously linked with North Melbourne and Richmond, but these connections have gone cold. Restricted free agent.

Gold Coast Suns

Gary Ablett – Has officially requested a trade to Geelong. Gold Coast say they need to bring in a best 22 player to be convinced to let him go. Contracted until the end of 2018.

Jackson Trengove – Set to sign with the Western Bulldogs, has reportedly told teammates he is leaving. Restricted free agent.
