Port Adelaide have received a second-round draft pick as compensation for losing Jackson Trengove, currently pick 30. They will lose it if they sign a free agent of their own, which they are expected to do.

Geelong are the latest club to be linked to Jack Watts, with Collingwood, Port Adelaide and Sydney also in the market for him.

Adelaide are reportedly going hard at Steven Motlop with a significant financial offer, he has also been linked to Port Adelaide, Gold Coast and West Coast.

Jackson Trengove moved from Port Adelaide to the Western Bulldogs on a four-year deal believed to be worth around $500,000 per year.

The 2017 AFL trade and free agency period is officially underway today, with free agency opening at 9am AEDT. Join me here on The Roar for live blog coverage of all the latest AFL trade news and rumours.

Free agency opens this morning but trading itself doesn’t open till Monday – regardless, there’s a good chance we’ll see some action today with both Jackson Trengove and Tom Rockliff likely to sign deals at new clubs.

Trengove is expected to move to the Western Bulldogs on a four-year contract after falling out of favour at Port Adelaide late in 2017 and not being selected for the Power’s finals campaign.

In other circumstances Port Adelaide would likely receive a second-round compensation pick for Trengove’s departure, however, the fact they are expected to sign Rockliff – and possibly Steven Motlop too – will cancel out any compensation they might have gotten.

It was widely reported on Tuesday that Rockliff had decided to join Port Adelaide, knocking back an offer from Carlton, and both parties have likely had more than enough time to finalise any relevant contract details between then and now.

The other free agents looking likely to move clubs this offseason both belong to Geelong, Steven Motlop and Daniel Menzel. However neither appears to have a new deal locked in just yet so may wait until next week before signing anything official.

Motlop, like Rockliff, is expected to head to Port Adelaide, but has also been linked to Gold Coast, Adelaide and West Coast.

Menzel’s future is less certain, but it’s believed that Fremantle will make a play for his services.

Other free agents to keep an eye on will be Taylor Duryea and maybe Ben Howlett – they haven’t gotten much interest yet, but perhaps things will change.

Of course, in addition to any official free agency moves, I’ll also be engaging in plenty of rumour, gossip and banter, so join me here from 9am AEDT and let’s talk AFL trades.

I expect Essendon will beat their chests about Francis for a while before accepting a mid second round pick. In Smith, Saad and Stringer they’ll be getting back better players at a better price.

This is probably good news on balance. Making sure they get each of the players who’ve asked to join them is probably more important than retaining Francis, who has battled through his first two seasons.

Port Adelaide confirm they’re keen on Aaron Francis. Could have the room for him if they miss Motlop and/or Jack Watts.

Speaking of Freo, we’ve just resigned Tommy Sheridan and Brady Grey for 2018.

Very happy we’ve resigned Grey, not super fazed about Sheridan.

(I’m not trying to hijack your blog Josh, there just seems to be a late flurry of news this afternoon!)

Really happy with the Grey re-signing but why Sheriden? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Cost us the 2015 Prelim. Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

You may be thinking of Zac Dawson Cat. Zac Clarke could offer a bit if he gets his knees right.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see a club that is light on ruck options offer him a spot on the rookie list.

Said in my article today that Aaron Francis is one player the Adelaide Crows should be targetting. Obviously the Crows are reading my work and gave the young lad a call! –

Aaron Francis looking for a trade.

Wants to return home to South Australia but hasn’t named either club there as a preferred destination. You’d have to think Adelaide are more likely.

      From the Herald Sun:

“He would prefer to return home,” Francis’s manager, Michael Doughty from TLA, said on Friday.

Doughty said Francis has asked Essendon for a trade, but conceded it appeared “unlikely”.

Interesting. He’s been a Bombers fan all his life so it must just be the go-home factor.

I’d be disappointed to lose him just when he seems to have gotten his body/fitness sorted but a first round pick would help the other deals get done, that’s for sure.

Fun little development with Lever: he’s been told to not show up to the Crows B&F tonight apparently. Huh.

        Cat said | 4:17pm | ! Report

I don’t understand doing that. Motlop, Menzel, Lang, Cowen were all at Cats B&F last night even though two are gone and the other two are likely to be gone too. They were a part of the season gone by, they should be there.

Maybe part of the problem is that they treat the players like commodities. Certainly seems that way with that sort of petulance.

They strike me as a very petty sort of club. Adelaide is a boring hole but even that doesn’t account for the oodles and oodles of players who have wanted out in recent years. Approaching Lions level of exodus down there despite playing finals most years

And it is only one of the Adelaide clubs – the more successful one too – so its obviously not a location issue.

I just got my Freo membership pack for 2018 though. That’s exciting, I guess.
