It wasn’t the most convincing of performances but reigning premiers Sydney FC have still started their title defence with a win over Melbourne Victory away from home.

Melbourne were the better team in the first half but failed with the final ball or touch on numerous occasions. Sydney grew into the game and by the start of the second half, were firmly on top.

An own goal from Geria brought the match to life as Sydney began bombarding the Victory goal. Bobo should have scored from point-blank range but somehow missed with his header while Thomas produced a fine save to his left to keep the score at one-nil into the second half.

The Victory had chances of their own but Berisha’s poor touch on occasion cost the home team dearly. The Albanian striker was played through on one occasion in the second half but failed to secure possession with only the keeper to beat.

Overall, the Victory toiled hard and will be frustrated not to secure at least a draw as they finished strongly. Sydney, however, stood tall in defence yet again with plenty of bodies in the area producing vital blocks to keep Melbourne at bay.

Sydney’s title defence off to the perfect start. Melbourne once again have to lick their wounds but should improve with a full squad to pick from next week.

    Final score

    Melbourne Victory 0
    Sydney FC 1

    The Crowd Says (10)

Deng scored the own goal, not Geria. There was only 1 goal scored, so how is it possible to get the most important fact wrong?

Did you even bother to watch the game?

Given Alan did the live blog I would say he did indeed watch the game.

Try not to let Muscat’s lack of class rub off on you.

So, let me get this right.

Someone who did the LIVE blog & watched the full game, where the commentators mentioned a dozen time “Deng own goal” and the score on the screen regularly showed “Deng OG” still got this fundamental & important fact wrong?

          There was 1 goal scored.

If and “Expert” reporting on the game can’t identify the scorer correctly, how about he be reclassified from “Expert” to “Roar Crowd”

            To answer your question, yes.

Everyone makes mistakes Nem, none more so than me, and as far as mistakes go I would say this is a minor one that is easily rectified.

              Fair enough.

He could’ve said Geria (who plays for MV) scored and MV won 1-0. That, too, would be a minor error.

I agree, but perhaps it comes down to personal perspective.

Yes, pretty sure it was Deng.

Big crowd for the opening round of the season last night: 24,804 .

With that crowd, you really have to wonder why Victory persist with playing matches at Etihad.

With the AFL taking ownership of that stadium last year, I thought it would have been the perfect opportunity to negotiate out of any contractual arrangement with Etihad. The AFL don’t have to be as concerned as the previous owners about making Etihad turn a profit year round and seem to treat Victory as an inconvenience. Victory fans generally hate it, especially now that the AFL refuse to move the seats in.

AAMI Park is an infinitely better place to watch football than Etihad. Surely football would be better served by having the ‘full house’ sign up at AAMI Park every now and then rather than try and cater to a few thousand extra people once or twice per year.
