AFL trade news and rumours Day 2 live blog

280 Have your say

We’ve been through weeks and months of talk, now the time is finally here for action. At 9am AEDT, the AFL trade period officially begins. Join The Roar for a live blog of all the news and rumours.

The latest news to start you off this morning is that Brisbane and Josh Schache have reportedly reached an agreement to send Schache home to Victoria if a suitable deal can be found this offseason.

A few other pieces of news from over the weekend:

Steven Motlop now looks more likely to join the Adelaide Crows than any other club, with Adelaide reportedly willing to put up an offer in excess of $600,000 a year for him. Port Adelaide are the only other serious suitor and their offer is believed to be about $450,000 a year.

Despite a meeting with Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe, Jesse Hogan has told Melbourne he doesn’t want to be traded. This rumour always seems to live on but you’d expect that’s the end of it for this year.

Also, it appears Jarman Impey has definitively picked Hawthorn as a trade destination over an offer from the Western Bulldogs. He’s contracted for next year but the Power will probably be happy to do a deal.

Today all eighteen clubs will meet at Etihad Stadium from 9am till noon to engage in a round of what is is essentially speed dating – each club will meet with each other club for a short time to discuss any potential trade deals between the two.

In some cases conversations have already begun weeks ago where players have made it clear that they wish to move from one club to another – this is the case for big-name movers like Jake Lever of Luke Hodge.

However those smaller-scale deals often start here as clubs make it clear to one another which players they’ll consider a trade deal for and which they won’t – so we might hear about some new players being place on the market today.

Of course, what that means is that if we get a trade deal officially done today it likely won’t come until the afternoon, and it’ll only be if it’s one that can be ticked off pretty quickly by the clubs involved.

If I had to pick one I’d say the Luke Hodge to Brisbane deal might get done today. Hawthorn have no reason to hold things up and he’s already confirmed he wants to join the Lions, so it should go through as soon as the Ts are crossed and the Is dotted.

Free agency of course is open too and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Tom Rockliff officially accept a deal from Port Adelaide today, though as a restricted free agent he’ll have to wait for formal confirmation from Brisbane that they won’t match the offer.

Of course, in addition to any official news, there’ll be plenty of rumour, innuendo, banter and discussion – feel free to toss in here anything you feel like talking about and we’ll do it! Join me for a live blog all day of everything AFL trades from 9am AEDT.

Not Josh’s fault clubs aren’t pulling the trigger on trades. Slow news days are a thing.

Didn’t say it was Josh’s fault, just that there was hardly any big news.

I think we can settle in for a few slow news days this week, I mean if Tom Rockliff still hasn’t lodged papers to say he wants to go to a club he announced he wanted to go to last Thursday people are hardly in a rush to get things done.

Plenty of self serving comments on the roar because of the limited news on possible trades.
Why is it that the Lions were berated widely and told they were better off without blokes who didn’t want to be there over the ‘go home 5’ but when Cameron asks for a trade they’re told it’s wishful thinking so forget it.
There is a limited batch of Qld bred talent around that reduces the homesickness excuse but the clubs in the major afl states don’t want the lions to get any advantage there, Eddie is a bitter person after all these years. Lions should require Port to get involved somehow to have Adelaide trade Cameron if they want Rockliff.

Larry – which of the go home 5 was contracted?

        And it wasn’t just outsiders who thought the Lions were better off without them;

“life goes on, you grow up and inevitably move away from home.. Appreciate the tweet #mummiesboysarehomenow

        Pearce Hanley (@pearcehanley) October 25”

As for Port getting involved with Adelaide so they can get a free agent – never going to happen.

          Hanley is a prat.

Macca is right too, they were all out of contract. We had to either trade or let them walk for nothing.

if Adelaide want to be churlish and not take their thumb out of their mouth down there, they’re perfectly entitled to hold onto Cameron.

Don’t think Port can expect this much for a bloke who never really gets games for them.

        Macca said | 4:30pm | ! Report

68 seems about right for a bloke who will be 24 before next year and has just 27 games to his name. If Port think 31 is fair for him maybe they would part with 29 or 30 for Nick Graham?

Josh, do you see any suitors for Zac Clarke or Jake Spencer?

      • Roar Guru

        Paul D said | 3:47pm | ! Report

If Stefan Martin winds up leaving as widely predicted, the Lions could do worse than sign Spencer as a backup ruck on the cheap, sort of a Trent West kind of role.

Not sure who our main ruck will be tho – Archie Smith is pretty raw, but he’s probably it unless we go get someone else. Can’t see Matt Eagles being given a run.

Matthew Lobbe likely to land at the Lions is my understanding.

            Ugh, really?

I’d rather persist with Smith and see him get better, Lobbe is 28 and we already have seen the limits of his talent.

Probably not Birdman, you’d be looking at them as depth and I think in the case of both the body is a bit too banged up for that to be worthwhile.

Cat – this is going to be a slow drawn out trade period I believe – Essendon and Adelaide are the key players and neither are as easy to deal with as Geelong.

I reckon the Ablett trade may end up being the first big deal done. All the whispers I heard said it guaranteed to happen and was 95% done.

I want Gary to come home but I worry the Cats are going to over pay.

Certainly not the same number of big names looking to move clubs at this point as there have been in the past two years, I’m curious to see if there’s any curveballs coming.

If that’s the case birdman and next years draft is a good as touted then compensation next year will be better than top 10pick this year. Still don’t think gaff will leave wce and expect him, yeo and McGovern to re sign soon enough.

It’s the wrong question. The Crows are within their rights to back themselves to try and keep him with another year, and of course they’ll be very much in contention for the 2018 flag.

I can understand why they wouldn’t want to trade him unless they were offered significantly more than what he’s worth. In my opinion pick 19 is significantly more than what he’s worth. They might see it differently.

If it falls through and we lose the ability to recruit a limited player for the cost of a good draft pick I won’t be bothered as a Lions supporter. Hopefully the club wouldn’t be bothered either.

My suspicion is that this is just posturing from the Crows though.

        • 2:02pm
          Birdman said | 2:02pm | ! Report

19 seems fair value but Crows may be concerned about losing pace off their list (even with Motlop) when they should be adding more.

That’s a fair point Tom, from what I’ve heard he has come close to asking for a trade more than once in his career though – I’d be low on confidence if I were them that he can be convinced to stay long term. But you are right that, especially being in contention for the flag, there is no reason not for them to try.

So Josh, any word on what Melbourne would be looking to get back for Watts? If they are looking to offload him, can’t imagine it’d be much would it?

Think they want a second-round pick roughly, which will be in the 30s if it comes from the Power or the Cats.
