The Everest 2017: live race updates, blog

By Ben Talintyre / Roar Pro

Never have I seen such hype for a race that is not the Melbourne Cup. The Everest is the newest Sydney Spring Carnival event that is sure to have plenty attention and money on it. Catch all the live race updates and results on The Roar from 4:15pm (AEST).

The twelve-horse field is stacked with some of the best sprinters going around for the 1,200m journey.

The hefty $10 million purse makes it the richest turf race in the world and the third wealthiest race on the planet, with the winner taking home $5.8 million.

This is such a hard race to predict with so many previous Group 1 winners in the field and the best sprinters around.

The key runner who will determine the speed map has to be Deploy. Whether Josh Parr chooses to push forward and sit outside the likes of Redzel or take a spot in behind will determine the speed in the race, and likely, the result.

If it’s a hotly run race the Grey Flash, Chautauqua, will be one to watch late, yet if left to dictate, Redzel could run a cheeky race in front and be hard to run past in the straight.

Vega Magic is currently favourite in the market but from the wide barrier it will need to push forward and might have to use too much petrol in doing so.

He might be vulnerable late as the likes of Chautauqua, English or She Will Reign will finish hard.

Houtzen is a query runner with his best being dangerous, especially if he sits on the back of the leader which is likely.

Brave Smash is also a roughie not to rule out.

Clearly Innocent at the odds is a good chance and might just get the perfect run in transit. He’s coming in second up and is primed for this race. First up he began slowly and stormed home from last to finish 1.2 lengths back in third. Definitely one to follow.

Prediction
1st- Clearly Innocent
2nd – Chautauqua
3rd – English

4th – Vega Magic

And the gates are back and we are off and racing. An even line out with Chautauqua as always dropping back with English. Up top they are setting an honest tempo while they sort themselves out. A tightly packed field up front as they pass the 800m mark. Houtzen continues to push through underneath Redzel to lead. Vega Magic has been taken back off the speed to find a spot. Brave Smash travels well back in the pack. At the 600m Redzel and Houtzen set the genuine tempo upfront as She Will Reign creeps up on the inside looking for a rails run on the turn. Redkirk Warrior and Brave Smash track into it nicely while Clearly Innocent under hard riding is not picking up these back markers are giving off a big start with 400m to go Chautauqua and English will have to be Phar Lap to win from there. As they corner Houtzen and Redzel give a kick as Redzel gives a kick away. Vega Magic looks the main danger down the outside as Brave Smash, Chautauqua and English look for gaps in the pack. Coming past the 100m though Redzel has put 2 lengths on them as the backmarkers close but it will be too late. Great win by Redzel. Vega Magic runs into a second a length off and Brave Smash in third. Chautauqua flies late for 4th that would be one mighty quick last 200m and Tulip good run along the rails late.

We are just over 5 minutes until start time as the horses are being paraded around and about to enter the track. Vega Magic looks like it'll start favourite but there has been support in the last hour for She Will Reign. This is sure to be one fun race.
