Behind the Barriers: Five bets for the weekend

By Adam Page / Roar Guru

It was a mixed day for the five bets last Saturday with Manuel costing us dearly, and My Diamantine nutted by an outsider. But Kaonic strutted his stuff and got the job done.

We are looking for five winners for the afternoon, so here are the five bets for the weekend.

Melbourne Cup Day live blog and results

Bet 1: Win, Moonee Valley, Race 3 – Number 4, Trekking
I’m dirty I missed the $7 but $4.80 was good enough. Still think $3.50 is a touch overs. Talented three-year-old for Godolphin and James Cummings who went no further after an even run in the McNeil behind Merchant Navy.

Freshened up and his trial a couple of weeks back at Flemington was outstanding. Looks very much ready to go here. Keen.

Bet 2: Win, Moonee Valley, Race 4 – Number 8, Demerara
Those who follow me on Twitter would know I have been talking her up for a couple of weeks now. She’s the good thing of the Spring Carnival in Melbourne. Very good filly for Godolphin and James Cummings who is three for three.

Caned them fresh at Gosford before going to the Rosehill midweek where she bolted up again and won with a bit in hand. Now in Melbourne and she looked outstanding in a Flemington jump out. Only bad luck beats her.

Bet 3: Win, Moonee Valley, Race 6 – Number 1, Big Duke
Glad I got the $3.40 all in and anything in black figures is good enough against this lot. Did a very good job in the Metropolitan before going to the St Leger where he was confidently backed late and aided by such a sweet ride from Avdulla. The import did it comfortably and won with a bit in reserve. Has a good record at the Valley and this will tell us if he is a Cup contender or not.

Bet 4: Win, Randwick, Race 2 – Number 9, I Am Serious
The $3 opening price was solid, and the $2.60 now is acceptable. She wasn’t a $1.70 chance last time out at Canterbury and she only just got there to win. But if you do watch the replay, she ran through the line strongly. This 1500 metres on a big track looks ideal for her and if she gets clear running at the right time, she wins.

Bet 5: Win, Randwick, Race 9 – Number 8, Interlocuter
It’s unbelievable that they opened him with $2.50. Multi with Winx and it was $2.70… how good is that? Now $1.80 and he should be a $1.50 pop against this lot.

Looked a good thing on paper when racing over the mile here three weeks ago and that is how it panned out under Angland, who shoved the horse into the clear and from there it was pretty painless. The rise to 1800 metres is perfect and only bad luck will beat him.

Looks very hard to beat does Big Duke, but more confident in Interlocuter, now with a drying track. If Trekking runs up to his jump out, they won't beat him.

Hi Adam, Trekking with a hungry Hugh up will fight it out with Ducimus. A natural Q. Big Duke is today's best bet anywhere in Australia. Doubt if he is Cup material. Agree with your CP assessment. Winx by 5.5 L from Humidor. Noted: When Bjorn Baker does Bathurst the bank is bountiful. Thank you Bjorn.
