The 2017 Melbourne Cup, known as ‘the race that stops a nation’ is not a race you’ll want to miss, but with plenty of action spread across a four-day carnival, including ten races on Melbourne Cup day, you’ll need to know when to tune in.

Every year the Melbourne Cup is raced on the first Tuesday of November, which this year means Tuesday 7 November. It is race No.7 on the day and begins at approximately 3pm AEDT.

Of course Australia has a few different time zones in action at the moment. Here’s the Melbourne Cup start time for your state, no matter where in Australia you are.

Victoria: 3pm AEDT
New South Wales: 3pm AEDT
Tasmania: 3pm AEDT
Australian Capital Territory: 3pm AEDT
Queensland: 2pm AEST
South Australia: 2:30pm ACDT
Northern Territory: 1:30pm ACST
Western Australia: 12pm (noon) AWST

The Melbourne Cup is of course just one of ten races at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day. The first of these, the Emirates 100th A380 Stakes, begins at 11pm AEDT, while the last, the The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, is at 5:20pm AEDT.

There is roughly a 40-minute break between each race, although the breaks before and after the Melbourne Cup are a bit larger because of the prestige of the event requiring both a greater build up and post-race celebration.

Races do not always start exactly on time depending on the unpredictable events of the day, but the schedule as it stands should prove to be an accurate guide for the most part. Here’s the complete scheduled for 2017 Melbourne Cup day, including the starting time, distance, and prize money on offer.
