Sure, you could ask an expert who is going to win the Melbourne Cup, and you’ll get a good answer – but is it as good as the answer you’ll get when a few thousand people put their heads together?

That’s what Twitter has done. They’ve crunched the numbers from thousands upon thousands of tweets in the past week to determine which horses are getting the most hype and therefore shape as the most likely winners.

Coming in at No.1 by this measure is 2016 winner Almandin, who is looking to go back-to-back. Almandin was also the favourite in the betting odds for the most of the week, but has been recently overtaken by a rival.

That horse is Marmelo – now into $7 odds to win the cup, and the horse ranked second overall in Twitter’s analysis. Marmelo is ridden by Hugh Bowman, best known as the jockey often seen atop champion mare Winx.

Coming in at No.3 in Twitter’s analysis is Humidor, who is currently at $11 in the betting odds, the fifth favourite overall by that regard.

Thomas Hobson comes in as the fourth most mentioned horse on Twitter, followed by Max Dynamite in fifth. They’re a bit further out in the market, at $19 and $17 respectively.

The notable absentees from Twitter’s top five are Johannes Vermeer, priced at $9.50 to win the Melbourne Cup, and Wall of Fire who is at $10 – they’ve both been overlooked by the majority of Twitterers in favour of those who are more clearly at the front of the pack, or those who are a bit further in the rough.
