The road to the 2019 Basketball World Cup begins for Australia as they face a trip to Chinese Taipei for a game they are expected to win comfortably. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10pm (AEDT).

The Boomers, as with all teams around the world, will be without their NBA stars, who won’t be released for FIBA’s new international windows.

As a result, Australia have picked an all-NBL squad for this and their match against Japan, on Monday back in Adelaide.

They will be led by fearsome point guard Damian Martin and scoring weapon Chris Goulding. The backcourt combination will be out to make a mockery of the home side’s defence, Australia having beaten them by 40 in the recent FIBA Asia Cup.

Alongside Martin and Goulding, Olympian Brad Newley and Adelaide 36ers star Mitch Creek will line up in the forward positions, while Angus Brandt, Nick Kay and Matthew Hodgson will form the centre rotation. Against many of the smaller Asian teams, the trio could have a field day.

The only real question for Australia is a level of cohesiveness on offence, and which players might be able to push for spots when the World Cup arrives, with NBA players back in the fold.

Alongside this pair in Group B are Japan and the Philippines, both nations being expected to make the second round at the expense of Chinese Taipei.

If Chinese Taipei can somehow pinch victory, they need to start strongly and defend well. A low-scoring game is their best bet of picking up a win, given their offence isn’t anything special.

Their keys will be backcourt combination Cheng Liu and Yi-Hsiang Chou.

Prediction
Australia will win and win well, getting their qualification campaign off to a high-quality start.

Qualification for the World Cup
Qualification has been flipped on its head with a new system for the 32-team Cup in China next year. Seven spots alongside the hosts are offered in the Asia-Pacific region, with four groups of four teams in the first stage.

The top three teams from each group qualify for the second stage, however, results are carried across, with two groups of six teams then set to contest for the seven spots. The top three teams in each of those second round groups are guaranteed qualification, while the best fourth-place team will also go through.
