Chinese Taipei vs Australia: Basketball World Cup qualifier live scores, blog

By Scott Pryde / Expert

The road to the 2019 Basketball World Cup begins for Australia as they face a trip to Chinese Taipei for a game they are expected to win comfortably. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10pm (AEDT).

The Boomers, as with all teams around the world, will be without their NBA stars, who won’t be released for FIBA’s new international windows.

As a result, Australia have picked an all-NBL squad for this and their match against Japan, on Monday back in Adelaide.

They will be led by fearsome point guard Damian Martin and scoring weapon Chris Goulding. The backcourt combination will be out to make a mockery of the home side’s defence, Australia having beaten them by 40 in the recent FIBA Asia Cup.

Alongside Martin and Goulding, Olympian Brad Newley and Adelaide 36ers star Mitch Creek will line up in the forward positions, while Angus Brandt, Nick Kay and Matthew Hodgson will form the centre rotation. Against many of the smaller Asian teams, the trio could have a field day.

The only real question for Australia is a level of cohesiveness on offence, and which players might be able to push for spots when the World Cup arrives, with NBA players back in the fold.

Alongside this pair in Group B are Japan and the Philippines, both nations being expected to make the second round at the expense of Chinese Taipei.

If Chinese Taipei can somehow pinch victory, they need to start strongly and defend well. A low-scoring game is their best bet of picking up a win, given their offence isn’t anything special.

Their keys will be backcourt combination Cheng Liu and Yi-Hsiang Chou.

Prediction
Australia will win and win well, getting their qualification campaign off to a high-quality start.

Australia by 26.

Qualification for the World Cup
Qualification has been flipped on its head with a new system for the 32-team Cup in China next year. Seven spots alongside the hosts are offered in the Asia-Pacific region, with four groups of four teams in the first stage.

The top three teams from each group qualify for the second stage, however, results are carried across, with two groups of six teams then set to contest for the seven spots. The top three teams in each of those second round groups are guaranteed qualification, while the best fourth-place team will also go through.

FULLTIME It won't finish at 40 though. One more bucket for the hosts brings it back to 38 before the buzzer goes, but that's a thoroughly convincing victory for Australia to kick off their World Cup Qualification campaign with a victory. Plenty of positives to talk about for the Boomers, but you almost want to reserve judgement until we see exactly what they do against an undeniably stronger Japan team on Monday back in Adelaide. I assume their flight out will be tonight to get back as quickly as possible, the turn around time being just 67 hours. In the end, Jason Cadee led the way with 16 points. Daniel Kickert had 15, while Kickert, Nathan Sobey and Cameron Gliddon all had four assists. Angus Brandt grabbed five boards. Some things to work on though. Turnovers were an issue. Chinese Taipei - 66 Australia - 104

There are some from non basketball background do decent commentary such as Speedy, John Casey, Bill Woods, Jamie Soward, Stephen Quartermain who would all be better commentators than the non basketball background commentators currently doing the NBL. No to the afl or other nrl commentators, I switch the games off. Andrew Voss is the exception for nrl commentator who has done NBL in the past. The lack of media campaign is not helping the league

Q4 0' McCarron with a three after a patient offensive set. Into the final 30 seconds as the lead blows out to 40 - interestingly, that's what it finished at the FIBA Asia Cup. Chinese Taipei - 64 Australia - 104

Q4 0' Australia crack the century through Newley! Chinese Taipei call a timeout as well. Chinese Taipei - 64 Australia - 101

Q4 1' Davis makes both. He has been by far the hosts' best, despite his aggression and some... let's say interesting refereeing decisions. He is subbed off after as well. Chinese Taipei have a huge game against the Philippines on Monday. Almost must win. Chinese Taipei - 64 Australia - 99

Q4 1' Davis into the paint for Chinese Taipei and he draws a foul taking a shot over the defence. 67 seconds to go. Chinese Taipei - 62 Australia - 99

Q4 1' Yi-Hsen Chou makes a bucket for Chinese Taipei, before Australia draw a foul. From the inbound it's Cadee in for Sobey who misses. Brandt there to finish it off though. Chinese Taipei - 62 Australia - 99

Q4 1' Australia scoring for fun out here. Transition bucket, then a turnover with a full court press and they go up again in a three-on-two situation. Chinese Taipei - 60 Australia - 97

Q4 3' Davis with a jumper from the free throw line for Chinese Taipei this time. That's before Sobey goes bolting through the paint and draws a foul on the shot. Did well not to lose his balance and stay upright there. Chinese Taipei - 60 Australia - 92

Q4 3' Chinee Taipei can't hand onto the ball here. Another turnover and they are really struggling to get back on defence, Sobey this time cutting baseline for the basket. Chinese Taipei - 58 Australia - 92
