Lehmann set to retire in 2019

By News / Wire

Australian cricket coach Darren Lehmann plans to hand over the reins at the end of 2019, saying his current contract will be his last.

“That will be it,” Lehmann told Fox Sports in an interview on Christmas Day.

“It will be a case of too much time, too much travel.

“For me, I’ve had a great time and really enjoyed the role and (I’m) loving it still.

“We’ll just get to that point and work out what we do from there.”

The former Test batsman last year extended his contract until October 2019 and says he won’t seek a new deal.

His final year in charge will include Australia’s title defence at the one-day international World Cup and then an Ashes series.

Lehmann, 47, became Australia coach in 2013 after the sacking of Mickey Arthur.

His record at the helm includes victory in the 2015 World Cup, winning two Ashes series at home and losing two in the UK.

Few indications have yet been given as to who might replace Lehmann, although his former teammate and current Western Australia coach Justin Langer is considered an early favourite for the role.

Dizzy already has two County Championships under his belt and understands young players.

Won't mind seeing the back of Lehmann as a coach. Over-rated as a player, as a coach/selector/bully he made it too personal too often, and disrupted several players' careers because their faces didn't fit his Boofprint. I wish his young bloke all the best as I think he may have what's required without being inducted under the father-son rule. What does drive me to despair is that it seems the heir-coach-apparent is Justin Langer, who appears to have taken too many shots to the head and is yet another with a distorted view of his impact on the universe. Add that to the Sutherland-Howard untouchable core of admin and I don't see too much to be fired-up about "going forward", as spin doctors are prone to saying.

Probably because there is not much rugby news and I guess most rugby fans take a bit of interest in cricket too.
