It's time for John Aloisi to go

By Nikola Pozder / Roar Rookie

Australian football clubs are more forgiving of their coaches compared to the rest of the world.

We see coaches get sacked after a month or two in countries like Italy and England. While these moves can sometimes be costly, they’re often imperative to shake up a squad or improve results.

Italian clubs are notorious for their unforgiving nature. Palermo, for example, changed five coaches in Serie A before being relegated last season. Giants AC Milan have gone through seven in four seasons with the recently appointed Gennaro Gattuso already hanging by a thread.

No matter what the reason, these numbers are ridiculous. But it all points to clubs, owners and fans demanding results.

Coming back to Aussie shores, club owners seem scared to pull the trigger. Two seasons ago, Adelaide United’s patience with Guillermo Amor proved golden as the club took out the grand final, but rarely have such decisions borne fruit.

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe springs to mind as one that has some extra credit with owner Tony Sage, although their results haven’t been all that horrific under his command.

But one does stand out in the A-League.

John Aloisi is a Socceroos icon. Yes, he scored the penalty that finally sent us to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Yes, he scored at that same tournament. Yes, he scored some massive goals in the A-League. No, he isn’t a good coach.

The statistics speak for themselves. His time at Melbourne Heart (now City) can’t be forgotten, where he managed just eight victories in 39 matches.

He did okay in his first two years at the Roar, finishing third in both campaigns, albeit in seasons not as strong as this one. Yet his stats tell a different story, winning just 40 per cent of games in two-and-a-half seasons.

This takes Aloisi’s overall A-League win record to just 33 per cent – a poor return by any country’s measure. Don’t forget, we aren’t talking about the Wellington Phoenix or the Central Coast Mariners, this is one of the biggest teams in the competition.

The Roar currently sit second-bottom in the league, only ahead of the Phoenix who can jump them if they win their game in hand. Aloisi has blamed injury and ‘crisis’ at the club for poor results. Isn’t he the one who should be physically preparing the players and knowing how to manage ageing stars like Brett Holman, Thomas Kristensen and Jade North? That trio is the heart and soul of the Roar team.

If the club won’t pull the trigger, maybe Aloisi should put his hand up. That doesn’t seem likely though, especially after his tenure at the Heart where he often claimed they were ‘unlucky’ rather than acknowledging their obvious failings.

Craig Moore has already left, seeking ‘new opportunities’. It’s time for Aloisi to follow suit.

Not sure its time for Aloisi to go. But I am sure the talent pool is not large enough. We need more Coaches to choose from or at least to be given their chance at the top level. Whether it is The System that means not enough coaches hold the appropriate licences, maybe due to costs involved in becoming qualified, or is it because we just don't produce enough quality coaches due to a lack of talent. However I am sure that the current pool has gone stagnant! The same group just seem to shuffle the deck chairs, with coaches moving from A-League Club to A-League Club. Very rarely does an Australian Coach get a gig anywhere outside the a-League, is it a lack of talent? Why do we not see NPL club Coaches getting a chance, or are they unwilling to take a chance, if so why? The same applies to Players, with the same old group turning out season after season, just in different colours, how are the public supposed to get excited about this ? Players can play for more than one team in the same season, that's not football, that's commercialism, that's greed and that's disrespectful to the fans who cough up their hard earned each week.

Waz - It says that JA inherited a team that had won the comp previously and GA was in the throes of "changing the guard" at Sydney FC. What do the stats say since then???? Cheers jb.

As an old Roar supporter I have a soft spot for Mackay however is form is so bad at the moment. There must be some explanations, I like he has lost his nerve.

The defenders looked like they stopped, waiting for the flag. They didn't physically stop, but there was a noticeable pause in effort. Even the crowd around me, who saw the off side, just stopped, waiting for the flag or VAR. Incredible. Where was Brown last night? and Bowles? Both were listed in the squad but no appearance. DeVeere has been disappointing this season, not sure that he's running on all six, and O'Tolle is still learning.

Yes, that was offside. However, even so, the defense of Brisbane Roar was poor. Watch the replay. O'Tool, Papa, Mckay, Khalfallah and Devere were there. They watched Timmis to send the ball easily. One should move up to guard/mark Timmis. However, all of them just stayed to set an off-side trap. One should move up to mark. That is something Jade North would do sometimes. O'Tool, Papa, Makay, Devere, Kristensen and Higert formed "almost" a straight line at that moment. And they let Harold unmarked, just waving for offside. The defense has been poor at that area for years. The suspected reasons were "Broich did not track back" or "the left back had move up to overlap", etc. The new suspicions are "aging players as they do not have much breath to run too much" or "just poor defense". As for overlapping, O'Tool seems to do what Thomas Broich would do as a winger. That is to say that O'Tool's overlapping timing is too early in a sequence of attacking moves. He should watch old videos to see how Shane Stefanutto would do.

Lionheart you are absolutely right about the offside. With Var it is supposed to clear out the obvious failures by the ref and assistant but Keogh was offside as was proved on all the replays. It does not matter if it was an inch or a mile he was offside (by my reckoning 500mm). Apart from that even though the Roar won they were far from a good team with too many wasteful and simple passes missing their mark. Thank god for Perth's fouling which opened the door for two goals because we were sadly lacking in creativity. Beautec apparently had some gastro problem.

thanks JB. I did have a linesman's view of that off-side, but elevated. I know we add a lot of passionate bias at the game, but I can not understand how it was missed. That aside, Glory were unlucky not to have scored another goal, but so too Roar, who were the better side I thought. I don't know what happened to Eric Bautheac last night. He was named in the match squad earlier in the week, but not mentioned yesterday. He is potentially our best player, like a tempered Holman I think. But always respect & appreciate your observations.

Waz - As you suggest TK is nowhere near fit enough for a full 90 minutes and the other player hopelessly out of form just now is Mackay, who is going through the motions of playing, directing everyone else by pointing hither and thither, but seldom ,if ever, contributing with a bit of mid-field magic, His "man marking" when the team goes out of possession is almost non-existent. This factor is also contributing to the fact that goals scored against Roar are more than often conjured up out wide on the wing where the youngster playing at full back is constantly exposed in breaks down that flank. If by some miracle this team can be put together in a formation where their talents are fully utilised, they could yet spring some surprises. Cheers jb.

Lionheart - When trying to analyse a game one has to take into effect what is going on all around the field. This is where wide angled views from a TV camera can sometime benefit a viewer over an actual attendee at the game eg The "offside" you mention was viewed 3 or 4 times and finally with a line across the field and if Keogh was offside it was because his knee was in front of that line. Team analysis-Once again there were changes made in midfield, not structural but positional with Khalfalla, Maccaronne and to a lesser extent Franjic plying their work there while Gameiro was reduced to Maccaronne;s "task " from previous games ,that of "target man". He got next to no service (as Maccaronne has claimed) and so it came as no surprise when he, Gamiero, was substituted. My interest was immediately lifted by Holman's presence for ,though I have never considered him a good midfielder ,he has always impressed with his running and attitude. So what happened?. At first it appeared Maccaronne was moved to his former "Target man" role with Holman doing his Phar Lap impression in midfield but then a strange thing happened and Maccaronne began to draw defenders wide and Holman raced into the gaps that appeared, result,- a winning goal. This group of players playing with Roar are in the main experienced professionals and if by some miracle they can be combined into a unit where their talents are fully utilised, they could frighten a few teams further up the league. jb

It is a ridiculous piece of legislation in a state that has a history of electing ridiculous politicians, aka Bjielke Pedersen and Beattie. It is symptomatic of the nanny state that a regional government should have that level of control over someone's private property.

Holman was on fire. Obviously wants another contract. TK though looks to be playing through injury, we’re still better with him in but he’s not near his usual best

So I watched live at the ground and not seen the TV replay, but it seems to me that Roar attack sparked up when Brett Holman came on. He seemed to lift the players and they started to look good then. Prior to that, McKay, TK and others but them mainly, were just hell bent on spoiling efforts to move the ball closer to goal, or they gave it away. Hingert starting to look good again, Franjic never stops trying and Avraam Papadopulous is just a joy. As to the VAR and ref. What a joke it is. I sit behind that linesman where that call was made (for Glory's second goal), an obvious off-side, half a metre at least, and yet another blunder for offside in a Roar match. Then there's the ref doing his best to destroy the game as a spectacle by blowing his whistle every minute or two. Can't he let the game flow a bit, and ignore some of that acting that goes on. It really destroys the spectacle.

Waz - Watched the game tonight and once again the "old boys club"played all the good football that was on view, that was on both sides. As I've said before, this Roar team is not a bad team, it is simply a team not very well put together. and with both teams not setting the league alight with their defensive organisations, we were treated to a 5 goal ,( good goals), thriller, but allied to that there was the usual amount of poor passing by both sides, causing constant possession turnover, which in turn adds to the excitement. Roar scored 3 goals, their first for a few weeks, but we mustn't forget their opponent just as recently conceded 6 goals to the league leaders .I'm afraid we'll have to wait and see, before going off half cocked. Cheers jb.. .

No, don't really support an A-League team. Personally i think they didn't play that well last year. Each to their own. This year no need to even speak about their football.

Pick a system he wants to play. Then the best formation to execute it. Then recruit to the system/formation. Then pick players on form only, not reputation.

What changes to coaching style should Aloisi make, to improve what he has to work with.

Nikola, I didn’t cast an opinion as to whether Mr Aloisi should be sacked. I only attempted to offer more data on what goes into the decision making process. Personally, I don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other. I see coaches sacked by boards that think the coach should have four wheels, an engine and be air conditioned so it is refreshing at times to see a club persevere through hard times. The proof will be in the coming months or next season I suppose.
