Magpies’ De Goey caught drink driving

Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey could face missing the start of another AFL season for off-field issues after being caught drink driving.

De Goey informed the club that he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.095 per cent – nearly double the legal limit – after a random breath test in Port Melbourne on Saturday night.

His licence was immediately suspended and he was disqualified from driving for six months.

Club officials will meet on Monday to decide how to handle the matter, with the Magpies declining to comment further until then.

The incident comes a year after he was suspended for three games for lying to the club when he claimed a broken hand suffered in a bar fight in St Kilda was incurred while playing with his dog.

De Goey missed the first three matches of the season while he recovered from the injury and then served his club-imposed suspension.

The Pies laboured to a 2-4 start in his absence and their season never fully recovered, Nathan Buckley’s side finishing 13th with a 9-12-1 record.

The 21-year-old’s latest indiscretion comes just weeks after veteran teammate Tyson Goldsack publicly took him to task over his fitness levels.

“He’s definitely not as fit as he could be, but he is learning himself how fit he can be,” Goldsack said.

“In another four or five weeks, he’ll be ready to go.”

De Goey’s 2017 season was cut short after round 21 when he underwent hip flexor surgery.

He suffered a setback in December when the injury flared after a knock at training.

The No.5 pick at the 2014 draft has played 50 games in three seasons with the club.

Interested to see what Eddie says about this on his radio show, probably nothing considering it’s one of his own. Will be interesting to see what Collingwood do to him after their so called culture change after their review last year and with this blokes chequered past. If they’re serious it will be a 7 week suspension and the biggest fine allowed under AFLPA rules. This bloke’s fast becoming the next Harley Bennell and it’s the perfect chance to make a stance if their fair dinkum about what they preach.

If he becomes as good as Harley Bennell, Collingwood should do everything they can to nurture him, mentor him …and keep him.

        Harley for the Brownlow.

          Harley’s a mess.

He won’t make it through the season without screwing up.

I’d tell him to hit the road. Sends a horrible message to the team when you let a guy make a mockery of your ethos and standards time and again.

            You’d tell him that, hey?

I’ll bet the club has been hanging out for that advice. You have such an embittered, sad approach to everything that you only elicit mockery.

If your thoughts are any indication, De Goey and Bennell have their lives in better shape than you do.

“I’d tell him…” You could mnarket your stuff to Dave Hughes or Pete Helliar. At least they would treat it with the respect it deserves.

              I know.

Harley is a special snowflake. He was once smacked when he was 6 and is yet to have recovered from the emotional scars.

What he needs is our love and understanding.

The drugs, violent incidents, getting kicked off a plane for being drunk, bizarre behaviour, not turning up for training — IS NOT HIS FAULT.

Only he knows what he’s going through!

Jordan de Goey is a big guy. To blow .095 he’d probably need to have had seven or eight in a relatively short session.

So apart from the illegality and the risks to himself and other drivers, even just in footy terms it’s a really poor thing to do.

A couple of weeks ago Goldsack said De Goey ‘wasn’t as fit as he could be’. At the time I thought that was a reference to his hip injury but perhaps it was something else. If you’re emboldened enough to have a decent sized drinking session at this time of year, chances are it’s been going on a while.

This might be a serious problem for the Pies.

The Murdoch papers are saying that he was caught by the police at 8:25pm, which makes the amount he’d had to drink astonishing considering how early in the night it was.

The biggest thing that’s stunned me, though, is that he’s apparently still a P-plater as well. Which, in Victoria, means he’d have had to have a zero blood alcohol reading. You literally cannot have a single ounce of alcohol, and certainly not seven or eight. It’s just mind-bogglingly reckless, let alone stupid.

I’d be fully expecting Collingwood to come down hard on the kid. To me, he doesn’t deserve any mercy is he’s been imprudent a month out from the season.

            .095 isn’t just a “few frothy’s”, it’s a fair bit of alcohol.

VMC’s calculator says a player of De Goey’s weight (82 kgs) would have needed to have had 7 drinks in 2 hours, or 10 drinks in 6 hours, to blow around 0.95.

I think AD is quite right in saying he would have known full well he had had too much.

So, these two are nothing short of stupid in allowing their indulgences to get the better of their sporting ability and future prosperity. Now, a clean cut footballer may get a contract as an assistant coach or even become a commentator once his playing days are over.Where does that leave these two???

Of course they are in error. But, the kind of human being that would condemn such behaviour by teminating their careers is a moral failure him/herself.

Bitter, hateful judgement is far worse in our community than struggling to comply with team rules. The whole world can do without your kind of dismissive judgemment.

De Goey broke the law. The law deals with that…not the backstreet mafia. Bennell is just struggling with social issues. Let these guys stay in a community that guides them and stay in the company of responsible peers.

Collingwood supporters can well do without Carlton advice! We simply expect the best from our players and do not want to be ridiculed by any Navy Blue sympathisers. Now, as regards Mr De Goey, he has two options:-

                a) Play like a man possessed to redeem himself and donate money to charity in the wake of his frivolous behaviour as a contribution to the community;

                b) Seek counselling and start his rehabilitation program on the understanding that a third strike and he is out!

I have a feeling you’re going to lead me down some psychological view of things, but I feel it’s important because you can’t just get smashed on a Saturday arvo, jump into your Jeep and blow well over the limit … as a p-Plater.

I respect what Don’s saying about the how bitter judgement is no good for anyone, but it was really stupid act, and after last year’s shenanigans, I think giving De Goey a lenient punishment will be useless.

The courts will do their thing, but Collingwood’s got to remind him he’s privileged to be in a position he’s in and that it’s far, far from acceptable.

Obviously just my opinion, but I think punishment is important in a case like this.

There’s overtones of “plenty of blokes would give their right nut to play AFL, how dare they waste this opportunity, I want them to suffer”

Most people come to realisation that they’re not going to be professional footballer in their early 20’s, but for a rare few the belief persists well into their 40’s that they’re a better footballer then half the spuds running round
