Hunt barred from returning to training with Reds

By News / Wire

Karmichael Hunt won’t be permitted to resume training with the Queensland Reds despite dodging a conviction for drug possession.

The 31-year-old’s future remains in the hands of Rugby Australia, who say they have “resumed” an investigation into his conduct after prosecutors dropped a cocaine charge against him in court on Monday.

A statement from Rugby Australia said Hunt would continue his “voluntary stand-down” from all rugby duties until the matter is resolved.

It means his playing career is still in limbo, with the national governing body a chance of tearing up his contract for bringing the game into disrepute.

Hunt has not trained with the Reds since his arrest on December 30 in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

But he has been keeping fit at a Brisbane boxing gym alongside fellow Reds exile Quade Cooper, who is out of favour and has been told not to come to training based on performance reasons.

Hunt pleaded guilty to possessing alprazolam – a tablet of Xanax – and to contravening a police direction after failing to attend a police station when required to give fingerprints. He was handed a $600 fine.

The cocaine charge was formally dropped due to a lack of evidence.

But the fact he avoided a conviction is significant and means he can not only travel with the Reds to play overseas matches, but he can also play in France or Japan – countries which deny entry to convicted drug users.

With the Queensland Rugby Union having lost all faith in Hunt after his second major off-field indiscretion in three years, a shift abroad is firming as a likely outcome.

However, because he falls a long way short of the 60-cap ‘Giteau law’, any departure from Australian rugby would spell the end of his brief Test career.

Hunt showed promise in his five appearances for Australia last year and appeared bound for 2019 World Cup selection.

His player profile has seemingly been removed from the Wallabies squad section on rugby.com.au, but is still accessible via an internet search.

While he is still contracted to the Reds for another two seasons, the recent recruitment of fullback Aidan Toua indicates coach Brad Thorn is prepared for life without Hunt.

UK outlet The Rugby Paper reported interest last week from French Top 14 clubs Bordeaux and Toulouse and English sides Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors.

Hunt has already played in Europe, having spent a season with Biarritz Olympique in 2009-10 prior to linking up with the AFL’s Gold Coast Suns.

Did I say it was an Nz rule. I’m talking about Thorn’s coaching

There is no such rule in NZ = that's a Kiwi fake news story. Mr Hunt didn't shag a mistress in a public dunny while waiting with a crowd of supporters for a plane with the rest of the Test team.

Thorny should be consistent then and sack his captain before the Reds season start, W.

Reds will move on from QC and Hunt. Pretty sure Thorn would have a pretty strict no d***heads policy.

Alprazolam – a tablet of Xanax is just a poor mans version of the safer Diazepam - Valium. They are from the same drug family. It`s an anti anxiety drug. A Relaxant. You can get it on a doctors script from your local GP. Don`t know what the big fuss is if he had just one tablet, unless he had a 800 of them on him and was selling them in the Valley. Now that is a different story. P.S Xanax is highly addictive and has short term effect/ high.

I saw that a while ago and EFS has developed a reputation for making outlandish claims. Like Pdivvy you don't know when he is right.

Only recreational drugs? First of all they're illegal and secondly if they show up in a drug test you will get a two year ban as per Matt Stevens, Andrew Walker and Big Dell.

Once the Reds go 0-5, The QRU will re-instate him against the Brumbies in Canberra.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that does not care at all about players taking recreational drugs during the off season.

It’s a big deal if you are a parent who doesn’t want sporting hero’s setting a bad example to your kids.

Why bring race or the need for police to have stop and search powers into it. This is about "form over substance" (no pun intended - Lol). Its a bit like Cameron Clyne suggesting to the Senate that if someone had accessed ARU emails (that split the dirt) then ASIC should investigate that breach of corporate governance. Our rugger kids and younger players need role models. They don't need overpaid recidivists who are devoid of self-control. Would someone please show Mr KH door. Thanks.

Several misconceptions about crime and policing in that post. Firstly, being in Fortitude Valley after midnight on a Saturday in December is pretty standard behaviour for anyone of similar age to Karmichael Hunt in Brisbane. In fact, it’s pretty standard for Lawyers, Doctors, Teachers, Judges and off duty Police of all ages to attend end of year parties during the holiday period in the Valley. Also, calling the Valley ‘extremely dodgy’ is pretty ridiculous. It is a designated entertainment precinct of Brisbane. Secondly, in terms of him being ‘spotted’ with items that he quickly threw away - where did you hear that? The police found a small amount of cocaine on the ground near where a group of people were standing, one of whom happened to be Hunt. Thirdly, the tactics of the police have been openly and rightly questioned in the media. For instance, they charged one of the people in the group with using a mobile phone in the commission of an offence (attempting to order drugs) on the basis that there was an text message saying ‘great, bring chairs, drinks and ice’. The owner of the phone is a restauranteur. Very poor form from the police. Having said that, I very much doubt that racism had any baring on this case. Fourth, Hunt’s long track record? As far as I am aware, he has only ever been charged with one other crime, being that earlier cocaine charge, and he provided extensive assistance to police in that case. Prior to that incident, he was thought to be a cleanskin. The failure to obey a police direction (to provide fingerprints), while somewhat less than ideal, is a very minor matter, and his excuse is believable, given that he probably wasn’t completely sober at the time the direction was given. And it’s not like he Later tried to burn off his fingerprints or anything. Certainly, it is far less of an of issue than Scott Higginbotham’s failure to obey a Police direction last year that resulted in him having to be physically restrained by Police when he attempted to force his way into a restricted area of a Police station (in the Valley). And Brad Thorn just made Higginbotham captain of the Reds.

Maybe it is better for all involved if Hunt moved to Japan and play some Top League rugby. Maybe he has some friends in Brisbane that have a bad influence on him. Maybe he his weak and can't say no. In Japan, it is very hard to score some sniff, maybe that is a better environment for him if he is serious about living healthy and playing rugby. But don't move to England or France, it is easier to score cheap blow there than it is to find an Aussie bar. And the culture among pro sports athletes in Europe is very much "it is ok with a couple lines on a day off".

I am not surprised that Hunt got off a more serious charge. However he now has two instances that are involving illicit drug use. Although he is a good rugby player that does not make him absolutely necessary to be playing for the Reds. There are a stack of players without his history that could and should be playing for the Reds in his place. I'd rather see a lesser player playing in his position than Hunt be there. You see I'm against drug users getting the nod over blokes that train hard and are clean, and don't use these drugs. IMO he should not have been allowed to play after the first instance. He has had prior bad behaviour form when he was at the Broncos. I can't understand how players get so many chance to play after digressing time and again and the administration keep forgiving them. Beats me and some are even lauded by their peers after they have given the game away. Take Andrew Johns for instance, a self confessed rec drug user for most of his career now lauded as one of the greatest by some, certainly not my opinion. Some say oh its not performance enhancing so its OK. It's ILLEGAL DRUG USE

i'm sure most of us do not disagree with you about those running the country. but this is the same utterly irrelevant argument as the cheika/cooper comments. it does not matter what someone else has done. it is what he has done. remember he was caught in what has always been an extremely dodgy part of brisbane, well after midnight. this is pretty much ground zero for the city's drug culture. he was spotted with items which he very quickly threw away - your stop and search allegation is the first hint i have come across suggesting any impropriety by the police (ditto the allegations of racism). he has a long track record. he does not learn. he has pleaded guilty - again - to certain charges. he failed to comply with police directions. he failed to provide fingerprints. the reason? it slipped his memory. does anyone seriously believe that for a second? how many chances does he want? at the very least, if thorn is serious about improving the culture at the reds then he has to go.
