South Africa vs Australia: International cricket second Test – Day 3, live scores, blog, highlights

By Lachlan Ballingall / Roar Guru

An even spread of wickets to the Australian bowlers saw them make a comeback late on Day 2, but the South Africans managed to take the lead on first innings heading into Day 3. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 7pm (AEDT).

Yesterday started well for the Proteas as they really did look in danger of running away with a big lead when Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla were at the crease. Both managed to get to their half-centuries, but couldn’t press on.

It was costly as well. Before either of these two went out, South Africa were cruising at 2-155, bearing down on Australia’s first innings total of 243.

Somehow, the South Africans finished the day on 7-263. Yes, they have a lead of 20 runs, but they will be disappointed to not have more wickets in the shed considering how well they were travelling yesterday.

Luckily for the Proteas though, AB de Villiers was able to spend time at the crease and add 74 runs unbeaten come the end of the day. If he had have gotten out when South Africa collapsed ever so slightly then there is a chance they wouldn’t even have a lead.

If they want to get that big lead he is the key and the others just need to bat around him.

In terms of the Aussie bowlers, everyone that has bowled has a wicket to their name. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh lead the way with two each.

Prediction
I feel this is said too much, but it is relevant for today’s play. The first hour is crucial in terms of who may win this Test.

If Australia can get the three wickets they need early, they stand every chance in this Test, but if the tail hangs around with de Villiers then it’ll make it very difficult to win at Port Elizabeth for the Aussies.

Now there will be only one result the South Africans will win in the 2nd. Test on the fourth day itself.

Overall, Australia have a more reliable bowling attack for these dry decks. For SA, it is all Rabada. If he gets suspended, they need green mambas for the next two. Will be mauled on these dry decks otherwise.
