Brisbane Roar have defied the tipsters and pulled off a remarkable win against an out of sync Sydney FC.

In a stunning victory off the back of two first-half goals, John Aloisi’s team now look a real threat for the finals after knocking of the ladder leading Sydney and keeping in touch with the race for fifth and sixth spot.

After a positive start for the home team, Brisbane struck first with a glancing header from Matt McKay and followed it up with a simple conversion from Jacob Pepper after an excellent ball from Ivan Franjic.

Both goals came within the first twenty minutes and Sydney seemed stunned. Graham Arnold called for calm and despite a few half chances, the home side were unable to get a meaningful shot on target in the first half.

With both teams struggling in the heat, half-time was greeted by both and Aloisi must have emphasised the positive approach required in the second period.

His team responded and despite Sydney eventually pulling one back from a Jordi Buijs cross and a Milos Ninkovic header, the Sky Blues never really built enough pressure on the Brisbane goal, despite plenty of possession.

David Carney mysteriously left the ground at half-time and we hope everything is okay with him, Alex Brosque was caught on camera appearing to spit towards someone or something and a total of twelve minutes of stoppage time were added when it didn’t appear anywhere near that amount was justified.

All in all it was a great win for Brisbane and another loss for the faltering Sydney.

I wrote earlier in the week that it was time for the other A-League teams to attack Sydney and Brisbane have lead the way.

Whether the champions can respond remains to be seen and the Jets will be squirming in their seats with an eye still on the Premiers Plate.
