My reason for merging the Carlton Blues and the Collingwood Magpies is the fact that they are fierce rivals. How could I resist?

If the Blues and Magpies formed one team, it would be filled predominantly with Magpies players, because the Blues have an inferior list of players.

Blues, Magpies

Coach: Nathan Buckley (Magpies)
Captain: Taylor Adams (Magpies)

B: Tom Langdon (Magpies), Liam Jones (Blues), Brayden Maynard (Magpies)
HB: Josh Smith (Magpies), Jeremy Howe (Magpies), Matthew Scharenberg (Magpies)
C: Will Hoskin-Elliott (Magpies), Patrick Cripps (Blues), Jack Crisp (Magpies)
HF: Matthew Wright (Blues), Ben Reid (Magpies), Steele Sidebottom (Magpies)
F: Tim Broomhaed (Magpies), Sam Kerridge (Blues), Callum Brown (Magpies)

Foll: Matthew Lobbe (Blues), Taylor Adams (Magpies), Marc Murphy (Blues)
Int: Scott Pendleberry (Magpies), Adam Treloar (Magpies), Levi Greenwood (Magpies), Nick Graham (Blues)

Coach
Both teams struggled last season, so it wasn’t as clear-cut a decision as it may appear. Nathan Buckley gets the job as he has already coached in the finals.

Captain
Kevin Sheedy saw something in Taylor Adams – he believed in his ability and gave him the opportunity to play at AFL level. Sheedy is a good judge of character and he resonates with me as a person.

Back line
Liam Jones has resurrected his career as a tall key defender and has to be one of the most improved players in the competition. Tom Langdon is capable of becoming a mainstay in the Magpies back six.

Brayden Maynard uses the ball efficiently, making every possession count, and Josh Smith always plays his role when given the opportunity to play in the Magpies back six.

Matthew Scharenberg is another player who is capable of playing in defence. Jeremy Howe is a utility player who can hold down the centre half back position.

Midfield
The recruiting of Jack Crisp from the Brisbane Lions was an intelligent move. Will Hoskin-Elliott has the ablity to play on a wing, and he can also provide another option in the forward line.

Patrick Cripps is already a leader for the Blues. He is capable of getting a lot of the footy and is constructive every time he touches the footy.

Forward line
Matthew Wright was second on the Blues goal kicking list, managing 30 goals last season. Ben Reid has the ability to lead onto a wing and play a pivotal role as a centre half forward.

Tim Broomhead is a fringe player with the Magpies who deserves more of an opportunity.

Callum Brown has had a good preseason and deserves to start in a forward pocket position. Sam Kerridge is capable of being damaging to the scoreboard and can play in the midfield if required. Steele Sidebottom started out his junior career as a forward and should be utilised there now.

Matthew Lobbe is a player who lost his spot in the Power team because Paddy Ryder was an elite ruckman, which is substantiated by being selected in last year’s All Australian team. Lobbe has played nearly 100 AFL games and has the capacity to be the number one ruckman for the Blues.

Taylor Adams was given a taste of AFL football thanks to the genius of Kevin Sheedy. Marc Murphy is an automatic selection as he is the best player at the Blues.

Interchange bench
Scott Pendlebury starting on the bench might surprise people, but he is there because he is capable of playing a number of roles. Adam Treloar can hit the scoreboard plying his trade predominantly through the midfield.

Levi Greenwood can play as a tagger and is a handy player to have on the interchange bench. Nick Graham should be picked in the Blues team on a regular basis as he has immense ability.
