Adelaide United, with a point to prove after recent failures at home, host the second-placed Newcastle Jets, who are looking to close the gap at the top to just two points. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Preview:

Game of the round, no doubt about it.

But forget ladder positions, at least for a moment. Let’s instead look at the previous two meetings between these sides this season.

The Jets are looking for their third win over the Reds, but those previous wins are somewhat deceiving.

In fact, not only will Adelaide feel that they were mightily unlucky to lose both meetings, at the time, Marco Kurz was adamant that his side should have won. So the Reds will have added incentive to not only rectify two wrongs this season, but shore up their finals position as well.

Given Newcastle were not exactly convincing last round, Adelaide should like their chances. Also, having drawn two games at home in a row, the Reds will be eager to snap that winless streak.

However, the real story of this match is the premier’s plate.

There are three things going on for the Jets in this match: how do they handle the loss of Dimi Petratos (on international duty), how will Ronny Vargas (surely he will start) handle running the team in only his second game back, and can they put pressure on the ladder-leading Sydney FC.

It’s the away team under the real pressure here.

Ernie Merrick will have his men charged, and he will have to. Newcastle were lucky against a wasteful Wellington last week, and they cannot expect that type of hospitality two away games in a row.

Prediction
I am tipping an historic third win over the Reds in a season for the Jets, with exactly the same scoreline. The premier’s plate should be more incentive for the away side than Adelaide trying to hold down a finals spot.
