By Lodge's standards, Carney should have been back years ago

By Don Aprile / Roar Rookie

Should Todd Carney be allowed back into the NRL in 2018.

If not why not?

I don’t condone all the things he has done but I feel he has done his time.

My main concern is that the NRL may want to make a sacrificial lamb out of him to take the heat off their decision to let Matt Lodge back into the NRL so soon.

After watching the video of Matt Lodge’s unprovoked, out of control, vicious attack on that poor family and reading about his ex-partners allegations of physical and verbal abuse, I cannot comprehend how he is back playing in the NRL so soon.

For Todd Greenberg to say that due diligence was carried out, his case was meticulously checked out and he feels he had done enough to be allowed to play so soon is very worrying to say the least.

Don’t get me wrong I’m all for giving players more chances depending on the severity of their offences.

The unwritten rule is “if you do the crime you do the time”.

Matt Lodge has not done his time.

If an American law court found him guilty of that offence and ordered him to pay one million dollars in compensation. That amount is a good indication of the severity of the crime.

As for his ban and not being allowed to play, how long was he actually out of the game for?

Correct me if I’m wrong ,he played for the Tigers in 2015, did not play in 2016, played for Redcliffe in 2017 is now back playing for the Broncos in 2018.

So realistically he has only missed one year of football.

Any offence against women and children should be given the maximum penalty.

Surely a slap on the wrist and a one-year ban is not the maximum penalty for what Matt Lodge did to that family in America and the physical and verbal abuse his ex-partner suffered.

Todd Greenberg should have and would have had all the information on both these offences before he made his decision.

He now needs to justify and explain why he came up such a controversial decision.

He has again shown the inconsistency of some of the NRL rulings.

And as for Wayne Bennett’s answer for why he should be let play again – “because he is a good player” – is beyond belief.

It is an insult those unfortunate people who were assaulted, abused and traumatised.

If it was Wayne Bennet’s family that this had happened to would he be so forgiving?

Does his rule apply to all clubs or just the Broncos?

As for Todd Carney, yes he also has a string of offences. Compared to Lodge, most of his are minor and yet he has not been allowed to play NRL for the past three years.

The only person Todd Carney has really hurt in all his offences is himself – although of course he can consider himself lucky he never hurt anyone while driving drunk.

I can’t condone what he has done but has it been worth the three years so far?

He has had a clean sheet since his last game of NRL.

I would like to think after three years to think about his past, and being 31 years old and hopefully a more mature and wiser person who knows his playing time will soon be up, he will have well and truly learnt his lesson.

As for Matt Lodge his case should be reviewed again and a more severe penalty applied.

There is no place in NRL for repeat offenders against women and children.

Hindsight is a great teacher, but it is also an unforgiving reminder of what might of or could have been.

I’m sure both these guys realise that now and will for years to come.

Was there evidence tendered to say she was? You do know that an AVO can be placed on a man without a shred of evidence, yeah?

All good, there's been enough biased commentary lately to justify being sceptical. I've got nothing against Carney getting another chance personally, I just don't agree with the idea that he's been treated unfairly.

I think Matt Lodge's ex- partner was physical abused wasn't she.

I absolutely treat them all as serious offences. I just think that anyone being physically assaulted is more serious than someone being intimidated.

Carney was sacked by the Sharks, not the NRL. Clubs don't sack talented athletes for single misdemeanors and it was reported at the time Carney appealed the sacking that he had already fronted the board twice that same year before the "bubbler" and that he'd already recieved several warnings from the club. Just because things didn't play out in front of the media before the "bubbler" incident at the Sharks doesn't mean there weren't any issues

I don't have to explain anything Ben because my article an argument is about the difference in penalties between Todd Carney and Matt Lodge. If you want to compare Russell Packer and Matt Lodge's crimes go for it. Anyway Ben if you don't class abusing, intimidating, and traumatizing women and children as a serious offence I think I would be wasting my time trying any thing to you'

Last straw from the NRL, NOT from the Sharks... I like how you try to lead the argument astray there. A pretty low act.

Can you please explain how a violent act against a man (like when Russell Packer almost killed a man) is different to an intimidating act to a women and child? I find it quite concerning that Matt Lodge tried to beat a blokes head in, and Russell Packer stomped on the head of a man he just king hit to unconsciousness, yet your comment here completely ignores Packer's crime, and paints Lodge's intimidation of a women and child as worse than the assault he inflicted on that man...

Could'nt have been too bad Emcie ,anything bad involving Todd Carney and the media would have been all over it.

Wayne, can you please elaborate - by law - what criminal offences have to have happened for an AVO to be put in place?

Ey! I definitely agree on the Radradra stance here. But how is Bennett being a hypocrite? Has he said someone that had committed the same crimes as Lodge "not" be allowed to play NRL again?... I'm confused.

Ben ,I'll try and answer your questions even though I don't fully understand where your coming from. The 'main' point of my article is that Todd Carney has been banned from playing "NRL" since 2014 and up this point in time he is still banned from playing "NRL" Matt Lodge offended in 2015 his ban has been lifted and is back playing "NRL" in 2018. In 'my opinion' comparing the severity of both case I think the penalties should be reversed. In regards to the amount of compensation he has to pay ...forget about the amount ,and I'll ask you Ben what you have seen with your own eyes how would you rate the serverity of Lodge's attack on that family? As for my opinion on Russell Packer playing again you've already answered that for me . In your own words,"Do you actually belive that in the enviorment we live in, that the CEO of the NRL would allow a player back into the NRL that they thought had'nt paid their price back to the game?." And last but not least the answer to that question is..Yes.

Reports at the time were that this was the last straw for the Sharks, meaning that there had been other incidents that went unreported by the media that they had issues with

IMO, a modern day "journalist" is one of the lowest forms of life. No morals. No values. And absolutely no respect.
