Round 1 footy went pretty much as expected for these two sides. The Saints held off a relatively strong performance from the Brisbane Lions, winning without making much of an impression.
North, for their part, lost to another Queensland team in the Suns, but that game was playing under torrential rainfall in appalling conditions.
Tonight’s game, played back in Melbourne, will either see St Kilda start their season with two wins, or North move to 1-1.
Today’s match will be intriguing to watch – can the Saints pull off a performance to outshine a possible bottom three team? Can the Kangaroos showcase what they’re really about in 2018 without playing in what was essentially a swamp?
Look for Jack Steven to back up his brilliant 34-possession, 2-goal performance from last weekend, while his teammates in Jack Billings, Paddy McCartin and Billy Longer will need to put in good performances.
Opposite Longer, it’ll be intriguing to watch Todd Goldstein to put in a good performance, given his spot is under threat from Braydon Pruess.
Youngster Jy Simpkin (22 possessions against the Suns) was a bright spot for the Roos, and another strong match will see his stocks rise further within Arden Street, while second-gamer Hunter Clark will be doing the same for the Saints.
The Saints have named an unchanged line up for tonight’s match – as have the Kangaroos. Not something you usually see in this day and age!
Prediction
St Kilda are starting favourites in this match, and deservedly so. I’ll back them to win, but a small part of me is sensing a North upset – which would be disastrous for the Saints, who are on a mission to return to finals footy. It’ll be the Saints, though – probably by about six goals.
