Match preview:

A rivalry is renewed on Easter Monday, as the dynamic trio for the Geelong Cats will combine for the first time this season to take on the might of the Hawthorn Hawks at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 3:20pm (AEST).

It is the start of something special for Geelong, with a returning Patrick Dangerfield set to link up with Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood.

Dangerfield comes into the side for his first game of the season, missing last week’s nail-biter against the Dees. A straight kick from Max Gawn could have spoiled the party, but it wasn’t to be, with Geelong holding on for a tense 3-point win in Ablett’s return.

For Hawthorn, they too started off the season in fine touch, firing their way to a strong 34 point win over Collingwood last Saturday night. Last year’s star recruit Tom Mitchell made history that night, notching a 54-disposal game, the highest in AFL history.

These two clubs have a storied rivalry over the years, beginning in 2008, when the Hawks upset the Cats in the Grand Final.

Since then, we have bore witness to some of the greatest contests of the modern era, and fans will be hoping for that trend to continue.

It certainly held true the last time these two sides met. Three points was the difference, with Geelong taking the chocolates thanks to a masterclass from Patrick Dangerfield.

Isaac Smith had the chance to kick after the siren for the Hawks, and redeem his 2016 Qualifying Final miss, also against the Cats, but he decided to play on, and would miss the goal to give Geelong a memorable win.

Players to watch

Geelong – Gary Ablett
Patrick Dangerfield is returning, but it is going to be hard to focus on anyone but the Son of God. He had a great game last week in his return for the club, racking up 39 touches and a brilliant goal. His form is looking good, and if we have learnt anything, it’s that you never bet against Ablett.

Hawthorn – Tom Mitchell
Arguably Hawthorn’s most important player, Tom Mitchell has a historic game last week, breaking the record for most disposals in a single match. Geelong will have to tag him, and tag him well if they want to nullify the Hawthorn star.

Prediction

While Hawthorn are on the rise this season, they are coming up against a strong Geelong outfit, who are welcoming back a dangerous Patrick Dangerfield.

They were without him last week, and still overcame a strong Melbourne unit.

Expect Geelong to be too strong for the Hawks, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be a close encounter.

Geelong by 15 points

Can Hawthorn continue their winning ways, and add another chapter to their storied rivalry with the Cats? Or will Geelong welcome in their dynamic trio with a win, and send a message to the rest of the competition that they are a force to be reckoned with in season 2018?
