Hawthorn have struck trouble after an impressive start to the season, with James Sicily banned and Shaun Burgoyne hamstrung.

Match review officer Michael Christian offered Sicily a one-match ban on Tuesday for kneeing Geelong skipper Joel Selwood.

The club will consider whether to challenge the finding at the tribunal on Wednesday evening.

Burgoyne, who has been exceptionally durable late in his 343-game career, will miss about three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the first quarter of the Hawks’ one-point win over the Cats on Easter Monday.

“He doesn’t have a history of hamstrings so we expect it to settle down well,” performance manager Andrew Russell said.

Burgoyne hasn’t missed a game since round 18 of the 2013 season.

Sicily’s incident occurred in the final term at the MCG and was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the head.

Footage of the incident shows Sicily tackling Selwood to the ground then dropping his left knee into the Cats star’s head.

Selwood later admitted he wasn’t happy with the treatment at the time.

He exchanged words with Sicily after the final siren at the MCG but the pair then shook hands.

Hawthorn vice-captain Isaac Smith spoke to reporters before the match review findings were announced and backed Sicily’s passionate approach to the game.

“Sis plays with a lot of passion … arguably Hawthorn’s best captain ever (Luke) Hodge played with a fair bit of passion as well,” Smith said.

“It’s a game that you’ve got to play close to the line and sometimes blokes will step over it and sometimes they won’t.

“I think the fans love seeing passion, aggression and spirit out on the field.

“Whatever happens happens but we’re confident that the 22 we put out next week will be fine.”

The Hawks face reigning premiers Richmond at the MCG on Sunday, with the Tigers coming off a loss to Adelaide.

After finishing outside the finals last season, Alastair Clarkson’s undefeated Hawks sit in fourth place after two rounds.

“The vibe is always better when you’re winning … we started last year really slowly and it was an uphill battle to make finals,” Smith said.

“We’ve started well and now we’ve just got to keep going and build on that.”

Premiership defender James Frawley was a late withdrawal against the Cats with a foot injury but is expected to return this weekend.

Burgoyne and Sicily are two big outs against the Tigers this weekend. Burgoyne so consistent and dependable. Sicily has been working well as that intercept marking player in the backline. I love his passion and aggression but as in this instance he needs to know where the line is and not cross it. The only benefit if these losses are maybe the chance to bring in some more youngster to give them some exposure and expierence againsts the raining premiers and the opportunity to maybe hold their spot.

It’s been amazing how Clarkson has been able regenerate this list so quick and have them playing so well after missing finals last year. Many of the young players including the likes of Brand, Howe, Hardwick, O’Brien and Burton still have so much development ahead of them.

Mitchell at the moment you would have to say is the best player in the competition. After his record breaking 54 disposals last week he backed it up with another 40 disposals, seven score involvements, 595 meters gained and hit the scoreboard with two goals.

That brings his record this season so far to 94 disposals, 50 of them contested and averaging over 680 meters gained.

Not cross the line? His only mistake was to touch Darling Selwood, which always earns you a week even if it’s self-defence!

Apparently it’s self-defence to tackle a guy to the ground and then drop a knee into his head?

I know you don’t like Selwood, but geez

You’re like a yellow Don Freo, nothing anyone ever does in his side’s guernsey can ever be condemned. Sicily has a long form line for losing his rag out on the field, you defending him reminds me of Lions fans who used to go on and on about what a hard man Brownie was when he was going round in the mid 2000’s booking himself a few weeks off for punching blokes in the face

Paul, you can’t grab a guy by the legs and not expect him to fight back.

Unless you’re Darling Selwood, of course, who loses his rag if he doesn’t get at least 8 frees each game. The guy took out Brent Guerra in 2011 and tried to get off by saying it wasn’t him, such was his expectation that the umpires and tribunal would always be on his side.

There is a reason why I condemn some players more than others and that is because some players are more worthy of condemnation than others.

I tend to agree with him Paul.

Selwood initiated the contact by actually legging Sicily. I think Sicily figured if you are going to leg me your head can cope 90 kegs on top of it.

I’ll be interested if the Hawks take this on at the tribunal. The way it’s set up now, I certainly would be giving it a crack.

My understanding with the Tribunal now is that’s a free hit. There is no risk of double penalties as there was with the previous set up.

Paul, I think many football fans share andyl12’s views on Selwood. I certainly do, and I’d go further to say he gets worse every year because he’s still bitter that he hasn’t captained a premiership. No player should be above criticism and if fans feel a certain player has it too good with the umpires then forums like this are their only real chance to voice their thoughts.

I’ve read your posts and you don’t mind getting quite vocal and emotional at times. I assume that when you do, you still want to be taken seriously.

There are politicians in this country and others who like to suppress all criticism and/or dismiss it as the work of biased media. I really hope this website doesn’t go down that path.

Andy has always been blind and abrasive (c.f. the Essendon saga) and to deflect Sicily’s crassness onto Selwood is another example.

I don’t share your concern that expressing a view on Selwood’s penchant for drawing free kicks is being censored in this country. A cursory glance at the comments section on any AFL.com facebook article about Joel would tell you that.

He admitted he hit Guerra but said it wasn’t intentional, he was trying to push past him when Guerra was blocking him

Selwood pleaded guilty to the charge, immediately putting him out of contention for the Brownlow Medal, but Geelong tried to downgrade the charge from intentional to reckless

Selwood emphasised several times during his evidence that he had not struck Guerra intentionally and added it was not in his character.

“I have never, ever struck anyone intentionally in my life,” Selwood said.

“My intention was only to get to the other side of him.”

I agree with Smith and Roughie both defending Siciliy publically but behind closed doors he really needs to be told to reign it in. You can’t give away silly free kicks like he did when he cost us the game against Carlton last year.

Cost the Hawks a goal earlier in the game pushing over Selwood as he was getting up off the ground and gave away a 50m penalty.

Opposition clubs are going after him and the bigger the match, the more he reacts, which won’t go well at finals time.

He’s a good enough player that he doesn’t need to do that sort of thing. Although he had a few goals kicked on him on Monday and he’s being remembered for his ill discipline and will miss a match because of it.

He and Burgoyne are very useful players for the hawks able to play forward or back.
