The last three games of Round 2 involved a number of highlights, including the continued good form of Sydney Swans’ forward Lance Franklin.

Franklin continued his pursuit of ninth-place Peter McKenna of Collingwood and Carlton on the AFL all-time top 100 goalkickers list. His four goals mean that he is now only two goals behind McKenna.

On the Sydney top 100 goalkicking list, he moved into 11th position passing Len Mortimer.
Mortimer started his VFL career in 1906. He played with South Melbourne until 1915, leading the club’s goalkickers for his first seven seasons.

By 1909, when the (now) Swans won the premiership, he had the most accurate kick in the league. In 1913, he became one of the first players to wear a protective skull cap.

The only other top 100 Swan goalkicker to score was Luke Parker, and his one goal took him past Greg Williams.

At Port Adelaide – with a much lower benchmark – seven goalkickers in the top 100 goalkickers scored goals, but we need to go down to 35 before a change in the ladder occurs.

Ollie Wines kicked one goal, but that was enough for him to pass teammate Matthew Broadbent and equal Steven Salopek.

Further down the list, Sam Powell-Pepper’s one goal helped him pass five goalkickers and equal three others in 74th position. Todd Marshall’s three goals saw him leap from the 98th spot to equal 91st!

In the Western Bulldogs-West Coast Eagles game, the lack of firepower from the Bulldogs camp was evident with the only top 100 goalkicker, Marcus Bontempelli, registering a major.

That was enough to draw him level with David Thorpe, a dual best and fairest winner in his nine years at the club. This, before finishing his career at Richmond where he played in a premiership his first season.

At the West Coast Eagles, Mark LeCras (an AFL top 100 goalkicker) kicked two goals, but still remained third on the Eagles goalkicking list. Jack Darling, who is sixth on the list, kicked four goals.

However, Scott Lycett who scored two goals moved markedly up the list – passing Andrew Lockyer, Mark Hutchins and Paul Symmons to draw level with current Bomber coach John Worsfold and current Geelong player Scott Selwood.
