2018 Commonwealth Games: Swimming Day 3 heats, live updates, blog

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Swimmers in six more events will have their fate determined on Day 3 of swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with heats set to set up some cracking finals in the evening session. Join The Roar for live coverage and updates from 10:30am (AEST).

Day 3 in the pool is headlined by the blue-ribband event, the men’s 100-metre freestyle. The one-lap dash will cover a staggering eight heats at the end of the programme, with the top 16 going through to the semi-finals in the evening session.

Duncan Carter and Aussie Kyle Chalmers are expected to be the fastest out of the heats, but will likely put in efforts less than 100 per cent to ensure they still have plenty in the tank.

Among others to watch will be Cameron McEvoy, Calum Jarvis, Markus Thormeyer and Jack Cartwright. At the front of the heats, there will be plenty in the battle for the final spots, with it likely to come down to a matter of tenths of a second.

The morning will commence with the men’s 200-metre butterfly, which is an event expected to be dominated by current world champion, South African Chad Le Clos.

Le Clos took the title in Budapest last year, but is also the Commonwealth Games record holder in the shorter 50 and 100-metre disciplines. Australians Grant Irvine and David Morgan are also expected to qualify for the final easily, while James Guy, Mackenzie Darragh and Jacob Peters are the others to watch.

It’ll be followed by the women’s 200-metre breaststroke, which has three heats. England are expected to dominate through Jocelyn Ulyett and Molly Renshaw.

Scot Hannah Miley will also be aiming to bounce back from a disappointing first night in the pool. Taylor McKeown is another favourite, while fellow Aussie Georgia Bohl will be desperate to qualify for the final.

The other events on Day 3 include a pair of para-sport heats, with the men’s SB8 100-metre breaststroke and women’s SM10 200-metre IM. Australia’s Timothy Disken will be favoured for victory in the men’s event.

A pair of 50-metre events will be the others contested on Day 3 with the men’s 50-metre backstroke expected to be led by Mitch Larkin, Benjamin Treffers and Northern Ireland’s Conor Ferguson.

In the women’s 50-metre butterfly, Cate Campbell and Erin Gallagher will fight out top honours, with Madeline Groves among those likely to be in the fight for qualification.

Be sure to join The Roar for live updates of Day 3 heats at the pool from 10:30am (AEST) and don’t forget to add a comment in the section below.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 8 The final heat of the morning's programme then. Another even start across the pool by the looks of it. Carter takes the easy lead for Trinidad, with the rest split by nothing. Hunter through in second and Scott third at the turn with Chalmers just struggling a little bit. Kyle Chalmers coming home like a bullet though. He hits the front in the final ten metres and edges out Duncan Scott and Dylan Carter. Chalmers does a 48.81. He and Cartwright are the fastest two qualifiers.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 7 Away in the second to final heat. It's McEvoy who has flown off the blocks here, but they surface pretty even with the yellow cap of McEvoy looking to be in the lead just ahead of Abeysinghe. He won't hang aroundd though as Kisil grabs the lead at halfway ahead of Sloan. McEvoy struggling to hang on here as Kisil and Abeysinghe hang onto the lead. It's going to be Yuri Kisil with the lead, ahead of Abeysinghe and McEvoy. 49.06 for Kisil, 49.20 for McEvoy. Cartwright still sitting at the top.

Men's 50-metre freestyle Heat 6 Le Clos very good off the blocks here and he has half a length to the rest of the field about halfway up the first lap. He will hit the wall about three tenths ahead of Cartwright with Cumberlidge in third. Cartwright is flying after a great turn though. He hits the lead with 20 to go and Jack Cartwright stop the clock in 48.85, going to the top of the tree with two heats to go.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 5 On the blocks for Heat 5. Bain looked to be the man off to a good start there, but he is put back by Vincent once they come up to speed, the man from Mauritius leading at the turn ahead of Bain by about two tenths of a second. Vincent doing a good time and he may be half a shot to go to the semi-finals here as he heads back up the pool. Will need a brilliant finish, and Bradley Vincent</strong has done so getting 49.93. Bain second, Mogne third.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 4 Fernander of the Bahamas a scratching from this race. Still in the unseeded heats here as Sobers turns in the lead at the end of the first 50. He builds his lead to half a length, but then it's Marquet starting to come over the top. Right down to the wall this, but Alex Sobers holds on in 51.12 ahead of Marquet and Anodin.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 3 Away in the third heat. It's Rabua in the middle and off to a good start, but he has dropped away. Schuster leads it at the end of the first 50 ahead of Fowler. Schuster builds his lead back up the second lap and the Samoan wins in 51.95. Rabua gets back up into second and it's Hoffman rounding out the top three. Just cracked 52 seconds that time.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 2 Elaisa and Wuilliez seemed to get off to the good start there, but Maine in Lane 6 has surfaced in the lead and holds it through to the end of the first lap ahead of Elaisa and Kalate of Papua New Guinea. Looks like it'll come down to Maina and Elaisa. Maina will hang on and the Kenyan, Steve Maina wins this heat in 53.53. Elaisa second, Kalate third. Still won't qualify for tonight's semi-finals.

Men's 100-metre freestyle Heat 1 Just the three swimmers in this first heat. All pretty slow off the blocks by the looks of it, but they are even across the pool before Yon hits the front midway through the first lap. Yon falls away though and it'll be Ben Dillon to take the win in 58.95. He has done about 9 seconds better than his season best entry time. Won't qualify for the semi-final though. Yon through in second, Thomas third.
