The grand final of Australian racing is The Championships and the mega two day Carnival kicks off this Saturday at Randwick with a world class ten race program. Here are my five suggested plays across the meeting.

Bet One- Each-Way- Race Two Number 2 Villermont
I’m surprised he is at $6.50-$7 because I thought he’d be much shorter. He comes through the Rosehill Guineas where he looked to be bolting on the turn and he did appear a winning threat but he just didn’t run out the 2000m behind D’Argento.

Back a few notches in depth here, hard fit and I think the 1600m is ideal. Great each way bet for mine.

Bet Two- Each Way- Race Five Number 14 Wheal Leisure
I think if you back this mare each way, maybe 1×3, you’ll get a good run for your money. Forget her first two runs this prep because she was sitting back against the bias both times.

Go on her run in the Albury Cup where she got a mile back off them and never really had clear air until it was all over, but her finale was excellent.

No issue with the trip, has upside and a turn of foot. I think she’ll run a ripping race despite the class rise.

Bet Three- Each-Way- Race Seven Number 12 Mission Hill
Looks a very open Derby but I think this horse at double figures is clear overs. Baker/Forsman trains this three year old and I thought his run in the Rosehill Guineas was a beauty.

Did plenty wrong in the run and really looked all at sea but once he put his mind to it, he ran to the line and through it with purpose. 2400m no issue for mine and he’s in the right stable, plus is 2/3 on dry tracks.

Bet Four- Each-Way- Race Nine Number 1 Humidor
I can’t believe the price of this horse, who for mine is second to Winx as the best WFA horse in Australia. Really good run first up in the Futurity before going to the Blamey where he looked a good thing on paper and won accordingly, albeit not up against much and again he wanted to duck in. For mine, he’s the best horse in the race so I’ll go his way, especially with blinkers on.

Bet Five- Win- Race Ten Number 1 Luvaluva
If she’s right, she wins and really should be an even money $2.50 chance. She has come back enormous for John Sargent and the Oaks looks at her mercy if she keeps progressing and wins here.

Kembla Grange Classic win was outstanding. She took her time to wind up but she eventually wore down Torvill, who placed in the Group 1 Surround prior. Behind that pair, the depth looked thin, which is a query, but hard to knock the way she is going despite the poor blood count which forced her out of the Vinery.
