Match preview:

Australia’s top-ranked female tennis player Ashleigh Barty is a heavy favourite to give her country an important tie victory against the Netherlands over unheralded opponent Quirine Lemoine. Join The Roar for live scores and a running blog from 2pm AEST (approx).

It’s not quite been as good as her giant-killing 2017, but the 21-year old Barty has still done more than enough to justify her billing as Australian tennis’ new golden child in 2018.

Third-round exits in Miami, Charleston and, back in January, at the Australian Open were about par for the course for the world No.18, but her Fed Cup record is impressive, winning 6 of her 8 ties, with one loss to top four player Elina Svitolina last year.

And she’ll need to be at her best, too, with Australia already 1-0 down in the tie against the Netherlands following an upset loss from Sam Stosur in the earlier tie.

Her opponent, 26-year old Quirine Lemoine, has been a regular fixture in the second tier of international tennis, with 15 ITF titles to date, though she has never yet cracked the top 100.

A win here would be the pinnacle of her career to date, against a top-quality opponent on foreign soil, but given the performance of countrywoman Lesley Kerkhove against Stosur, an upset can’t be totally ruled out.

Prediction
Barty should be too strong here; she’s in solid form without completely setting the world on fire, and with an Australian crowd cheering her on and an opponent outside the top 100, she has no excuses to not salute.

Barty to win in straight sets

Can the pugnacious Aussie fighter square the tie at 1-1? Or will her unknown Dutch opponent give her country the perfect start to their Fed Cup?
