Young excellence, promotion battles, and a happy farewell: The Australian team of the week from players around the globe
Even though St.Pauli ultimately lost a high-scoring affair, Jackson Irvine was a standout, as well as scoring a late goal.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup keeps drawing closer, and speculation around who will make the Socceroos’ squad for the tournament is increasing, and we want you to tell us who should be on the plane to Russia.
With new coach Bert van Marwijk at the helm, it remains to be seen what the exact 23-man roster will look like, although there are a fair few sure-fire things. Midfielders Tom Rogic, Aaron Mooy and Mile Jedinak will all surely be picked, and the same can be said for Trent Sainsbury, Mat Ryan and Matthew Leckie.
That said, plenty of selection questions still need answering.
Should veteran Tim Cahill crack the squad? Should the 19-year-old Daniel Arzani get chance to show what he’s made of? Which one of Danny Vukovic, Mitch Langerak, or 36-year-old Brad Jones is more deserving of a goalkeeping spot?
There’s little certain about the make-up of van Marwijk’s backline, with youngsters Aleksandar Susnjar and Alex Gersbach both pushing to get the call to go to Russia. Alex Wilkinson, who has been in outstanding form for Sydney FC over the last two seasons, is another contender for a defender’s jersey, albeit a slightly left-field one.
All those questions remain officially unanswered, so why not give van Marwijk a helping hand by picking the squad you think the Dutchman should to take to Russia?
