After the Canberra Raiders handed the Cowboys yet another defeat on Saturday night, one has to ask: what’s going on with last year’s grand finalists?

The loss takes the Cowboys to a record of two from eight, their worst start to a season since the turn of the century. I wrote an article a week or so ago suggesting that Johnathan Thurston should retire now rather than later, to quit while he’s ahead, but maybe the whole team should give it away as nothing seems to be going right at the Cowboys.

Saturday night’s game was another disappointment for the players and fans. Despite the Cowboys drawing first blood through the combination of Thurston and Gavin Cooper, but that’s where the tries stopped. The Raiders hit back, answering with three unanswered tries of their own to take out the game 18-8.

The Cowboys had several opportunities to return fire but failed to capitalise on any of them. It seems a lacklustre attack from the Cowboys and strong defence for the Raiders was the main cause of Saturday night’s result.

Whatever is happening at the Cowboys, it’s certainly strange and disappointing. Little more than six months ago the Cowboys were looking down the barrel of another premiership victory and a miracle finals series. Now they’d be lucky to win a chook raffle, and the fans are getting fed up.

Talking to several fans after the game on Saturday night, it’s clear that people are starting to turn on their side. Many are wondering how the Cowboys can go from defeating the Melbourne Storm in February to notching up only two wins for the season – and not very good wins at that – by April. More than one fan said they are prepared to hand back their membership if things don’t improve.

I think the problem is that the halves are not what they were last year and the drive to succeed is gone. The Cowboys attack is dismal despite having some of the best forwards in the game.

It’s certainly time for some big changes at the Cowboys.
