The Brisbane Lions will be hunting for their first win when they host the Collingwood Magpies at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 4:40pm AEST.

The Lions fell 34 points short of the GWS Giants last Saturday. Brisbane were inaccurate and only managed five goals for the match, kicking thirteen behinds.

Collingwood are also coming off a loss, falling to Richmond in a fourth-quarter fade out last Sunday. The toll of a very short break following their ANZAC Day clash showed, but the intensity was high early for the surprise team of 2018.

The last time these the Lions and Magpies met was in round 10 last year, Collingwood won by 45 points.

Brisbane’s selection this week is headlined by the inclusion of Matt Eagles, the winner of Fox Footy’s ‘The Recruit’ reality program. He will start on the interchange and is expected to play in the backline.

Luke Hodge will return after being rested last week, while Nick Robertson is out through suspension and Ryan Lester has been omitted.

There are four changes to Collingwood’s line up this week: Travis Varcoe, Darcy Moore, Ben Crocker and Taylor Adams will come into the side.

They will cover Brayden Maynard (ankle), James Aish (knee) and Ben Reid (achilles) who are all out injured, as well as the omission of Callum Brown.

Tom Cutler will play his 50th AFL game for the Lions, while Darcy Moore will reach the same milestone for the Magpies.

Brisbane are desperate for a victory, they’ve been close without success in recent weeks, but Collingwood have had a rejuvenating seven-day break and are out to put themselves back on the winners list.

The return of Darcy Moore and Taylor Adams from injury only boost the Magpies team, who will be far too strong for Brisbane.

    Collingwood by 29.

      Heartbreak for the Lions

The Collingwood Magpies defeated the Brisbane Lions by 7 points in a Sunday evening thriller at the Gabba.

Unexpectedly, this game was the match of the round. The combination of accurate goal kicking, impact of centre clearances to scoring and how close the match was, kept everyone watching until the final siren.

Brisbane’s disposal was poor early; far too rushed and their early goals came from free-kicks. However, every time Collingwood broke away to a twenty point lead, the Lions found a way to reign it back it and keep themselves in it.

The Lions’ also turned the ball over far too much going inside 50, allowing Magpies’ defenders to take several uncontested intercept marks. There were two pinpoint passes to inside 50 targets by ex-Crow Charlie Cameron that were exceptional, and set up two goals in the third term.

A five goal haul for Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey highlighted the night for the Magpies. Steele Sidebottom (34 disposals, 6 clearances), Brodie Grundy (16 disposals, 39 hit outs and 11 tackles) and Tom Phillips (28 disposals, 1 goal) were also great.

Collingwood stuck to their game plan, opting not to tag Dayne Zorko as teams have in previous weeks, and it almost cost them the game.

Zorko’s 34 disposals, 4 goals and 10 tackles were huge for the Lions.

Brisbane’s Stefan Martin (28 disposals, 24 hit outs) and Dayne Beams (31 disposals, 2 goals, 5 tackles) found plenty of the ball also.

The Lions’ and their fans will be heartbroken after this game, they came close once again, but sit with seven losses to start the season. A win is not far away though – Western Bulldogs are next up and that could be their scalp.

Scott Pendlebury is the only injury concern for the Magpies. Pendlebury got a knock to his left ankle and attempted to return to the field in third term, but finished the match on the bench.

Brisbane will travel to Etihad Stadium for a Saturday night clash with the Western Bulldogs, while Collingwood will host Geelong at the MCG on Sunday.

      Great stuff from both teams.

Despite what the ‘experts’ say, this was always going to be a tough game for the Pies. They showed some composure, controlling the ball for the better part. FIGJAM will be pleased with this, but he won’t be happy with their defensive efforts.

Unlike Carlton, the Lions may be at the bottom with them, but they’re playing some good football.

Saying that I don’t want to hear acceptance from F@gan, his team or the fans for another admirable loss. Hate losing, and the wins will come — even if that means being ungracious in defeat at times.

      Thanks for the call, Sarah.

“Saying that I don’t want to hear acceptance from F@gan, his team or the fans for another admirable loss.” – agree with this 100%. Lions fans have been told for years to look for positives in loss after loss after loss after loss after loss. I worry that it is now ingrained in the players – they should be hating the fact they lost that game when it was there to win, not accepting an ‘honourable defeat’

The paine and agony of being a Lions supporter. If the Lions defence could increase by 10% and they find a real strong key forward they could be a serious team.

So many one percenters during the game that if we’d just had cleaner hands we probably get a few more goals. The vision is there but the skills just don’t keep up at times.

Best part for the Lions IMO is the fight back they showed every time they went down 2-3 goals. In past years that would have been game over and start the blowout.
